I received a single Hysterocrates sp. “Ghana” this fall as a freebie and haven’t seen any other people with them so wanted to make a discussion/information thread to give info on them with what I know thus far and will learn as time goes on raising this up. In case these become more widespread may help new people.

General husbandry:
Fossorial; keep as other members of the suggested genus with ample moist/slightly moist substrate to burrow in. I do allow the moisture to cycle in the substrate a bit though (as a personal practice with all mine spiders).

Set up:
(1/4in-1/3in dls)Housed in 5oz deli condiment cup mostly full with substrate (clay topsoil in your case). Given a small piece of bark as top of a starter burrow with a small hole made under to start. Given a water dish. Also ventilated along sides and lid.

Appetite:
Very strong as sling.

Behavior (sling):
Initial observations: Fairly bold thus far; Not very reclusive or bolty/flighty; will come out of burrow throughout the day and evening hours; dug a deep burrow within a few days and buried the water dish completely. Also despite being “another brown spider” it is very beautiful IMO with nice attractive setae! Overall after almost two months I am loving this one!

Additional information:
The adult female mother of this one was said to have noticeably thick rear legs. Awaiting photo of it and will update when I get that!

Photos: in order: Detail, initial upon receiving; after settling in and burrowing water dish; showing ventilation and outside of burrow shot.

I wonder if it is the same as gigas, laticeps, or one of the other ones like species "Benin". I'd keep like gigas but sounds like you are. Interested to see the growth rate and adult specimen

I mean not sure but the person told me that the adult female “hasn’t been checked to all gigas types side by side yet”. Maybe if I get the photo of her that’ll be possible for us. 🤞
Nonetheless I am also interested to see the growth rate and what the adult specimen turns out to be!

Well 6 months update, this individual is quite fantastic to keep and I am super pleased with having it in the collection and look forward to more years with it!!

-Like the rest of related species, incredible appetite and willing to take down prey far larger than its body and more.
-Active fossorial, seems to always be doing something to expand its burrow. As is shown in the below photo it has now three entrances/exits to its underground structure! It is likely time for a rehouse as the substrate is excavated almost all the way up to the lid of the 5oz delicup!
-growth rate is nice, I wouldn't say the molt cycle is notably quicker than other similar species, but does impressively double in size every molt so far! And now has attained some very striking brown colouration!

-TD;LR (I heard the youth use this term 🤣) overall for 6months, they have shown nothing but being hardy, neutral temperament, reliable eater, attractive, great activity, nice molt changes, but most importantly an incredible fossorial!
-Really wish I had a few more of this species! Have to sex its recent molt, but either way I hope whatever sex it ends up being it gets a chance to breed!! Thanks for stopping by!

Clearly it wanted to let everyone see how good it looks as I finished typing and came out for a quick phone pic! What a ham!! 🤣

This incredible T quickily has gone back to work as a miner and no is bringing chelicera-buckets full out pretty much continuously since rehousing! They have now gone from a 5.5oz condiment cup into this a 5.5x6.6x7.5 Mdesigns food container 826B0483-5578-4F8C-B16B-A860DAC2E0F7.jpeg A0CAF6C7-07F8-451E-BB19-F2510C871919.jpeg
