Hundreds of Scarlet Millipedes

I found a place where there were, literally, hundreds of scarlet millipedes (Trigoniulus corallinus). So I collected just some of them, and by some it's probably between 300-400 (if not more). I stopped counting after roughly 70, and that was only a fraction of what I had.

There were still probably hundreds all over. Probably more.
I have them in a tub with some of my isopods but no other millipedes.
I've never had this many millipedes. It's pretty awesome.
I do plan on setting them up in a large aquarium, most likely.
I might go get more some time as well. Not sure yet.

For me it is always a little bit crazy that you have so many animals in the wild that are exotic pets for us ^^. Your find is amazing, I am a little bit jealous, and thinking about moving to Italy and find there tarantulas, scorpions and scolopender .

I suppose everything at one point would have been considered "exotic". Though I agree with you.
I know this species is actually invasive where I live and isn't a native species, but I've never found this many in one spot.

Thank you!
I was quite shocked myself, I never would have thought I could find so many of one species in one spot.
I would love to move somewhere else where you can more easily buy and sell non-native species of millipedes.
We're very limited to what we can get a hold of in the USA, mostly only native species with a few non-natives.

I do truly hope that changes some day soon.

I realized that you are very limited of getting species of tarantulas or other animals. But you are allowed to catch tarantulas, millipedes and scorpions in the wild? We aren't. Millipedes yes, but our scorpions are protected. Also our snakes, frogs, lizards, salamanders .... not a good idea to catch them.

Here the governments of Austria, EU and several countries wants to limit or better absolute prohibit keeping wild animals in private hands. Because 1st private keepers are not in the position to take that care this animals needs :banghead:, and 2nd this animals should stay in the wild, it is animal torture to keep them at home (keeping a pig on 2 qm is ok -.-" ).
Every year we have more limitations and restrictions. I've read the different campaign contents in Germany. They don't bode well for us, because Austria is mostly following Germany :(.
In Austria we currently have a very restrictive animal shelter law, more restrictive than the German one.
We reptile people don't have that big lobby like dog and cat keepers. So we are free for politics. Keeping this animals is not "normal". And has to be battled, under the flag of "nature and animal shelter" :shifty:.

I'm not certain on all species of tarantulas and scorpions, but I know you can collect some from certain areas. It's not a good idea to collect them from any kind of protected land, such as national and state parks.
I Know a lot of our wildlife is protected as well, and collecting live or even dead specimens can result in fines or even jail time. Killing them goes the same.

Yeah, I honestly feel like our laws are sometimes...not as strict as they should be in some regards to different kinds of exotic animals (like big cats, wolves, wolf hybrids, etc). People can just go buy tiger cubs and that is dangerous. I think it's gotten better but I'm not sure to be honest.
The laws restricting non-native insect and general inverts from being imported makes sense because some species do have the potential to escape and survive in the wild and destroy natural and native populations, but a lot of them don't pose any kind of threat at all. Millipedes aren't a threat for hurting native populations, I believe the 'Fear' stems from mites that were found on some wild ones that were imported back in the 90's (I may be wrong on the date but I believe it was around that time).
I think it's been proven since then that those mites wouldn't have caused any kind of damage to crops, but I can't recall at this moment.

It's a shame, invertebrates are such unique creatures, and since most people who keep inverts and have a passion for them, is a fairly small group, it's hard to fight for rights to own them. Or import exotic species.

I have a few issues with some of our laws. But it always bothered me that someone with no training or knowledge could purchase a deadly venomous animal (snake) over the counter, no record, etc. I support pet keeping and animal research and I think it is important to study venomous animals; milking snakes etc. but I just don't think it should be as easy as it is. I am not up with exotic laws like I used to be, but 20 years ago there was absolutely NO regulation. I have a lot of experience with circumstances where people had NO business subjecting a beautiful animal to their care. Once an 18 year old boy bought a venomous snake (I think a spitting cobra; it was expensive). He had no idea what he was getting into and ultimately put the animal in the box it arrived in into a glass aquarium and poured boiling water in until it died. No research before hand. Spoiled brat. I'll hush, but I would support those laws.

I believe there are some laws/ regulations in place now in terms of obtaining and owning venomous snakes, you need a proper permit before you can own them. However, I don't know what you have to do in order to get said permit. I don't know if you have to prove you know how to handle them, if you have to get trained. I have no idea.
But that doesn't stop people from getting ahold of them illegally and not having got the permit in place before getting them. People will go around the laws to do what they want, and it can put them and others in a lot of danger.

I'm not sure if there were other posts or you're just referring to the laws, regardless, thank you!
I might try to trade some, I just haven't gone into the trade forum yet haha.
I don't really need so many, and I would love to get some new species I don't have and have wanted for a while now.

That is incredible. When I go to Florida I see plenty of them, but not THAT much... you are going to have a LOT of baby scarlets to care for.

Wow!! Look at all those little guys!!
There are a lot of them, and they are, quite busy most of the time.

Nice find.
Thank you. I've wanted to go back and see if I can find any other species around, I just haven't had a chance to go yet.

I normally only find around 3-5 when I do find any of this species. I had been wanting to find more and well, I suppose I was granted that want haha.
Yeah, and I'm looking forward to it!!

I'd be interested in buying some or trading
Awesome, I'll message you so we can figure something out!
