Can coolie loaches dig through aquarium sand? I haven't seen any actually go through it.

I bought two about six months ago, and they always used to sleep together under a shell in the tank, but when I finally got around to cleaning the tank, I noticed one of them was three times it's size, while the other one was nowhere to be found.

Hmmm... Probobly. But what is more likely is it took a trip up your filter. Those suckers can get into anything. I have heard of many a kuli(I belive its spelled this way) loach dying via a filter

nah, it's an old fluval canister with a fine grill over it, no way a coolie could get sucked up, even if he tried. Plus the carbon sleeve is directly behing the mesh.

Yes they can dig through sand gravel and pretty much any loose substrate.
