How to tell if my T is sleeping?

I did a quick search on the forum and saw references to tarantulas sleeping, but how can one tell if their T is sleeping vs just sitting still for awhile? I got my first T today, and right now she’s still with her spinerettes pressed against her body instead of waving around behind her. Does this mean she’s asleep?

Check to see if all 8 of its eyes are closed.

Tarantulas never sleep. However, they do have favourite resting positions that they’ll settle into when they feel safe.

They never sleep........... These creatures never stop being so darn interesting. I guess that's why we never see sneak attacks in giant tarantula movies. :pompous: I used my noggin.

How do you know they don't sleep?
Has anyone ever done studies on this?

I often walks very quitly at night just to not wake my tarantulas up. Especially my OBT. She has very bad mood. But sometimes i fail and hear from my OBT tank. "Who the F@%&#ck woke me up?"

You know, the more I hear about Old Worlds, the less I understand why people keep them!

They lack the neurotransmitters/chemicals/reliance upon a circadian rhythm system because they don’t have true brains. Yes, they have long periods of inactivity but that is not physiologically equivalent to sleep. Sleep is more of a tetrapod and certain fishes like parrot fishes and sand sleeping wrasses.

As others have said they do not actually "sleep" in the traditional sense of the term as we know it. They do enter extended periods of inactivity though, sometimes days at a time. But the right type of stimulus will instantly jolt them to life.

You can’t tell.

But many of us have observed still Ts get startled- maybe they were sleeping.

Well if you have xp, they are not that bad, most of them
Maybe I won't feel this way in a year or after a few more T's, but OWs seem like such a big responsibility. I'm not saying I'm not responsible, but with two cats (my T is in my closet, with a door stop under the door for extra security. I don't open the door if a cat is in my room) I don't know if it's something I want to take on. I love that I can see the different crazy OWs on the forums and YouTube channels!

yeah just don't do your work on them when cats, dogs, or other people and stuff that can cause distraction are around you. OW Ts are a lot more skittish and can really be defensive when threatened or spooked.
