How often do you run your heater?

How much and when you need it will be completely different depending on where you live. If you are in the north like me, its pretty much going to be on 24/7 from late October till early to late may. If you live in Georgia or something, you may only need it a little on only the coldest nights.
I live in an area that gets really cold, but I don't plan on running it 24/7, way too expensive for that long of a time. I think I'll just do what was suggested above and set it to turn on when it's lower than 70.

I can't keep a space heater running 24/7
The operative word is "won't". Doing 24/7 is a great way to burn down the house with some of those types of units.

Whatever you get, make sure it's UL listed for added security.

from what i see it's adjustable, it has that rotary thing with small to bigger dots, figure out what dot is ~70 and keep it pointed there
From what I see, that heater looks like a loudspeaker and that rotary thing is the volume control that you´ll crank up when you listen to old, Yugoslav rock songs :D

But, jokes aside, I tried to mention something like this in one of the first posts where I linked to the space heater I use. It´s produced here, but I am certain you will have something similar in the US which is safe to leave on while being at work, school or whatever people do during the day.

i use a timer and teperature breaker in series to run my heater. so it checks
>is between 7AM-9pm?
y/n
>if y then >temp breaker
>if < 84f then flip breaker, if higher flip off

so my t room is self regulative to slowly climb from 70f or so at night to about 80f at noon, go no higher than 84 by 3pm, and then start tapering back down to 70 after 3pm to 9pm.

edit: but my heater is a portable radiator style space heater, not one of those hot air ones. much safer, arguably more efficient

I have a space heater in my bug/spider/reptile room and in the cooler months we do leave in on 24/7. It has a digital thermostat so we just set it at 70F and any time the temperature drops below that it kicks in. It works great - most of the time. We did have one mishap, though, when the power went out unexpectedly. When the power came back on, the space heater somehow reset itself from thermostat-controlled mode to "on" and just kept running. (That's the one thing I like about manual vs. digital controls - they can't change unexpectedly from something as simple as a power surge or outage.) By the time we discovered it that evening when we went in to feed and water, the room temperature was well into the 90s. Most of the critters were ok, but it did wipe out our fruit fly cultures.

I soooo wish I could get a few of them off of you! My sister used to have a giant subspinipes and he/she was a joy lol.

I keep my space heater on 24/7 in my bedroom and keep the air conditioner on at the same time because if I leave the heater on without the AC it gets to 90 very fast and if I keep everything off it freezes very fast. NY winters, everybody! :D But I set the AC so that it will only cool the room to 77 degrees then turn to the "fan" setting, so it won't overpower the heater in the battle of the temp

Only for the entire house, and the rest of the family is so against heat that if I turn the thermo up even 1 degree I get screamed at :bored: Apparently the AC + heater in my room don't add too much to the bill, otherwise I'm sure my mom would force me to stop using them. I'm also severely anemic/ severely sick in general so maybe my mom lets me keep it controlled in my room out of pity

I use a thermostat with a sensor, with the heater plugged in. if the sensor senses a temperature drop it goes on automatically and off when the desired temperature has been reached.

I recently revamped my T room to be the pet room. I have all my Ts in there as well as my reptiles. I shut off the vents to the room and setup a space heater to keep the temps in the range neede for the pets. Now I can have the rest of the house the way I want it.

I am using this heater. It has a built in thermostat and has the heating elements in oil which reduces the risk of fires over open element heaters. With it sitting on a heat shield mat I'm comfortable leaving it plugged in and on all the time. It cuts on when needed. Once I got it adjusted, it keeps the room at the temperature I need. I'll be watching the power bill to see what effect this has on it but so far it's looking good.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I think I'll go for the space heater I mentioned and turn it on when the temperature is below 70.

I'm sorry Lady, living near to you I would had gladly gave a couple for free, trust me :)

But at least bit of solace with S.subspinipes is that they are incredibly cheap and almost always available. Basically I received a WC gravid female  it's like throwing a coin in the air and win, uh :-s

True! I was going to get a S. polymorpha :bored: But I think I prefer the bigger species like S. subspinipes
