a lid, fine mesh and vaseline will do the trick...especially for monsters like hissers.

if one is really paranoid they could use the mote trick people use for ant colonies. water surounding the top to prevent escape...although some roaches fly...and go in water. nevermind.

I would think most people are more concerned with the roachers escaping from the tarantula's cages if they aren't eaten right away rather than the container they colony is in.

I would like to get away from having to feed Crickitus chirpus to my tarantulas, since they die so fast and smell rank lol.

What is the life span of dubia roaches? Do they live longer than a cricket's 8 week life span?

My local reptile shop has some Madagascar hissers that I am thinking about trying, are these a good species to feed tarantulas?

Yeah, they can live for around a year once they become adults...

Like others have said, once you try roaches you'll never go back to crix.

I used to do the buying 500+ crix via the internet back when I had lizards, and what a pain. You get them and half would die shortly after arriving due to transit, they stunk, they made noise, and they never lived long enough to be of any food value. There is no local petstore within 30 miles for crix, most of what they had were terrible quality.

Once a friend got me a colony of lobster roaches, I was hooked. All it takes is a little forethought into a container to keep them contained in and you're good to go.

I've got mine set up in a 2-3 gallon lock-able Rubbermaid. I cut out the center portion of the lid and hot glued aluminum screen to it for good ventilation.

I used Bug Stop previously which lasted for 2 years or so, but I recently cleaned the container thoroughly and found my Bug Stop had congealed into one large Teflon mass in its jar. So for now I just used Pam, the cooking spray. Spray it on a papertowel and wipe around the inside lip 3-4" down. It seems to be working so far.

I feed mine tropical fish flakes/catfood/baby cereal all blenderized together, and offer a shallow bowl of water.

So I would give roaches a serious thought if you haven't already.

I used to buy 1000 crickets at a time but am now using roaches. They are superior in every way.
To answer your other question Jungleguts my female emp and her babies all eat dead roaches without hesitation.

I got tired of the smell and the hassle of crickets. They stink, they get away, they die, and you always have to clean the enclosure. I recently purchased 80 b dubia's and they are currently cooking into a colony in the closet. Hardly no smell at all and pretty easy to keep.

hissers are slow breeders. unless you have few animals i would use a different specie.

Hmm, forget crickets. Now I need to find a place sells feeder roaches.

Size Q: My G. rosea is 3.5'' legspan, how big a roach (or cricket if that's all I'm limited to) should I feed it?
