It's interesting how the enlightened developed countries go ballistic when they hear of staged animal fights in more backwards countries. Yet at the same time in these enlightened countries severe, crippling and even deadly injuries happen every day win competitive sports. Then let's not ignore the wanton slaughter and occasional maimings of wild animals during 'hunting seasons' with, at best, the justification of supplementing the food sources but mostly various forms of trophy hunting. In the hunting of wild animals the third world strolls past the enlightened folks where much more often it's acts of necessity.

"But they are just dumb animals forced to fight. That is animal cruelty!" And what exactly goes on in so many scrums in Rugby?

If I use the H word in regards to all of this righteous indignation it will instantly brand me a pariah. How Dare You criticize our favorite national pastimes you vile lout!

cool so in a nutshell the justification is whataboutism - i am already critical of and have done political work surrounding competitive human sports, including horse/dog racing, trophy hunting, etc - i already think we should hunt the hunters so would you like to take some guesses as to what i think should happen to people who fight animals? because in my neighborhood people who fight dogs wind up missing

Dumping me back in a P.O.S.T. class, hmm? I'm neutral and still think in cop mode. As the instructor said as we studied the penal code, "The law is the law. There aren't certain codes in bold enlarged type. The judge isn't there seeing the incident and having emotional sentiments. Do not take on the role of judge, jury and executioner."

people who fight animals are in the same boat as pedophiles and neo-nazis - it’s really that cut and dry

I've got Hmong relatives. They are very often callous and cruel. It's a part of their culture born of being an underdog people for centuries. An almost universal pastime is hitting dogs on the head, making them cringe. Children before they can walk learn this form of entertainment. And of course I get on my high horse, a shining example of moral righteousness above such horrible mentality and consequently become a shunned and to be ignored non person in the villages.

One day I mentioned this entertainment and my indignant response to my monk. That I can't get near a dog to pet it. Raise my hand they cringe and avoid me. His reply, "If the dog doesn't cringe it intends to attack and may be rabid." :astonished:
Welcome to the third world. Open your eyes and leave you moral highground at the doorstep. Things are not always what they seem to be or have caveats attached you don't know about.
But I still love to befriend stray dogs. Heck, I've been a stray dog my entire life come to think of it.

i’m Jewish + Romani - i have zero problems confronting my communities about things which should be confronted about - things don’t change unless people stand up and change them

... I didnt know that Ill get this kind of reaction. Spider fighting is like a culture. Ever since I was a kid theres already a lot of people playing with spiders. This past june is when I started to buy some spiders and play with it. I didnt even know that there is a spider load. When someone invited me to play with them, everyone of them have syringe so ofcouse im confused. I asked them about it and they told me to go youtube and reaserch. Of course you dont want to lose your spiders and the spider load you make must be good or if its not it will just kill your spider.

But you can buy 1box which have 100 spiders. If we have a spider who dont have complete legs, we sometimes free it in the wild so that it can lay eggs and there will be more spiders. If you think that because of the hunters catching spiders that it will be endeangered, its not. Usually farm owners burns their fields or the forest here in PH is getting destroyed.

But precluding and getting yourself ostracized in the process is counter productive.
being or feeling ostracized from your community does suck - i myself have been banned from some synagogues because of some criticisms related to Israel and have had people have labeled me a “Haredi extremist” but what’s most important is to always stand up for what is right no matter what - injustice prevails when we say and do nothing

Not judging anyone, but I know a much better sport where the spiders are quite a bit bigger, and the losers are insect pests that no one will mourn. Lots of us discuss this sport here.

i think there’s a big difference between feeding predatory pets what you have too because their obligate carnivores and animal fights - i mean, i get what you’re saying but I also think people who get off on “feeding responses” and so on might be in the hobby for the wrong reasons

I'm all for respecting different cultures, but if something is being done strictly for entertainment, and it hurts/kills other living things, I see no value in that tradition. Just where I stand personally, I can't stand people making animals fight.

I wouldn't call feeding our tarantulas an 'animal fight' or say that we "get off" on it, but I don't think there's anything wrong with admiring the prowess of an eagle as it dives for a fish. I doubt many people here are saying a little prayer for each roach and thanking it for the sad sacrifice it must make in order to keep our obligate carnivores alive. I cheer for my aggressive feeders. I love watching Phormics and T. apophysis somersaulting through the air after some roach. I don't think it's cruelty. The spiders have to eat, as you say, so there's no added harm in us admiring how they do it.

here too I would make a demarcation between an appreciation for the animal and a pathological fixation on the killing part - i personally am completely indifferent to giving my arachnids their prey and I usually just toss them in and let them have it and go about my business, c’est la vie, it’s just nature

i’m in the hobby because I have deep respect for the animal’s intelligence, beauty and behavior, the fact that they’re also predators is totally inconsequential to me much in the same way that I don’t care that my cats or beta fish are also obligate carnivores

BUT BUT BUT... feeders are different. They're not animals, they're food!

When i was in elementary there are people selling spiders to the children. I buy from them and will fight other kids. Its like pokemon. I dont even like dog fights. Maybe because i grow up with spider fighting that I got used to it.
