Ooo man I knew it, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the same, but yes they most definitely know, hate to say it but the invert hobby is filled with greasy liars compared even to reptiles or fish it's way more scummy. My bad experience was when I bought what was supposed to be a T. Blondi, labeled and all and it turned out to be T. Apophysis.
I didn't complain to the seller but the next expo he was at I didn't buy anything from him. What's crazy is the other invert guy at the show had their back and said their 100% legit, I don't know if it was to cover them or what. Still upset because even though apophysis is prettier it's way faster and seems more aggressive. I'd hold a blondi or stirmi I'd never hold a apophysis.

Try to find someone locally who is a breeder. Or someone you can trust if you do have to ship the Ts to them. But if you end up with males get them to a breeder and usually they'll give you something else in trade or offer slings if the breeding produces a sac. Or both. Breeder always need males.

I am sure what you're describing happens and if thats the case id avoid buying from that seller in the future if you can help it. Raising males is still fine with me. If I can send them off to breed I'll get new slings out of it normally anyways. I bought a 3in P. metallica about a year ago. It was unsexed but a good price. It molted for me recently and it's 4in+ now. I sent pics to a couple people who confirmed ventrally it's a male. I didn't even hang onto him I dropped him off with a semi local breeder who has adult females lined up when he matures probably next molt. If he's successful producing a sac all I'll have to do is remind him and he will take care of me with a couple slings. Just gotta develop that relationship with someone local. Breeding is fun to me, having to feed hundreds of slings and find homes for them is not though haha. He sells and does expos so I can pass slings off to him and it takes all that work off my plate. Works out well for both of us!

Local shop sells mostly unsexed over 2”-3” so far I’ve mostly gotten males
But I haven’t bought enough to say what gender they all are. As they keep up to 14 specimens at once.

Put this chap up for loan and get some slings out of it. I just sent someone here from Facebook yesterday but he may not be able to find you. Make a post on the classifieds and DM me if you want the name of the person.

As a tarantula breeder, private breeder, wholesaler, and ex. business (temporarily withdrawn). Anything sold as unsexed should be taken in as a "male". Even if the seller, breeder, or vendor is reputable or honest, all "unsexed" species should be considered as male. This isn't to say anyone is scamming or deceiving, but rather to prepare for the worst for those people wanting female specimens. Not trying to say everyone has good intentions selling unsexed T.'s, because some people can be just greedy. But I would honestly recommend people to buy sexed females if you truly want one instead of buying an unsexed specimen to be safe.

My rule of thumb is that always buy multiples of slings or juveniles, but that's really because I want breeding groups as a breeder. But it does have benefits of getting better chances for females and future breeding projects. I always have to acquire a minimum of at least 5 slings when buying in groups. But that's just me.

Also, off topic, but prices these days are extremely inflated and all over the place. So know the market well before inquiring to buy any T.
This is what I do for species I want a female of that don't have confirmed for sale. Assuming the seller is acting in good faith, buying 3 slings is an 87.5% chance of a female. I've done this for my true top 5 wishlist species when then are under 150. Occasionally I will just buy two, but I've got double males that way. Double females too, but the boys hurt for the particular species.

That said, many species I'm perfectly happy to own once, regardless of sex.

Never had this issue. I’ve only bought from very well known breeders or very honest breeders.

This good sense idea you have doesn’t hold much water.

Are some sellers selling known males as unsexed, absolutely IMO.

Used to be 35-50$ too. They aren’t worth 150$.
For the different care requirements like humidity and moisture alone, I’d rather spend my 150 on a confirmed female sub adult D. Pentaloris. Once one of my juvies outgrows it’s enclosure I’m going to get one to fill the empty space I think.

I only buy sexed females, or multiples of small slings to raise. Avoids the issue and guarantees some females. I always try and send any MM's off to breeders.

I usually buy as small as I possibly can. But there is one particular expo seller that had a couple juvies of species I really wanted and I'm fairly certain both times they are pretty apparently male by vent, and the seller knew it. I suspect they bought a handful for a breeding group then sell off the leftover males at the expos. Still waiting for molts to confirm, but I'm pretty sure I'm not wrong. Once is chance, twice is a pattern. Passed on his bigger G. Pulchra juvie at the table and went for a 3/4" one for that reason. I'd risk it again for something reasonably priced, but I'm pretty sure its not an accident.

I’ll take massive backlash for this I’m sure, but I routinely stop in my local Petco since they carry 4-5 different species at a time, and have sales up to 75% off frequently.
Thus far, out of 9 purchases, 7 are confirmed female, 1 is confirmed male, and 1 is still unsexed.
No deaths or illnesses have occurred. In fact the only death I have had was from one of the most respected breeders/sellers in the community.

Say what you will, but $62.00 total for a female B boehmei and a female B hamorii, each over 3 1/2 inches is hard to walk away from.

I do the same thing at my petco and have ended up with females and at discounted price during there sales. I even got a 3.5 in B. Albiceps that was labeled Mexican red rump. For a total of $35 dollars. It molted out 2 months after purchase and ended up being female. I feel that petco doesn't know crap about spiders so they aren't pulling any tricks, i can find good deals or mislables and hit a come up. Where my local shops that sell T's or expos I have to be alittle more careful.
