That's one mystery explained I've been wondering about for years. Up in the hills near Mae Hong Son just after dark I saw a what the heck. Looked like a butterfly but flew like a bat.

Any mammal with flight impresses me. Orange bat is next level though, maybe even on par with Dermoptera. Thank me later.

Picture this; night safari in Sabah, bioluminescent fungus line the beaten trail and strange noises come from the trees. Even with headlamps, you can hardly see anything in the dense rainforest. Reach a small clearing and take a short breather, regroup, what have you. Suddenly a massive figure swoops mere inches from my head, I could feel the wind it generated as it passed me. It happens a few more times and each time I become more and more concerned for my safety. I finally got a good look, giant flying squirrels!?!? No! Malay Colugos (Sunda flying lemur), part of the order Dermoptera. Interestingly, this is a sister lineage to primates containing 2 genera each with a single species, all found in SE Asia.

I saw a moth that looked similar to one here ages ago , undescribed species . Not a bat but not a species anyone else saw . Had tiger stripes and size of a cecropia.

Bats are the ones that do fly, and the number of species is amazingly large. However to see such bright color, and pattern on the wings is WOW for any mammal, right! Too bad they only produce 1 pup per year.

That's pretty wild. Like a Tamarin with wings, way too cool.

I can already picture a troupe of them swooping down, grabbing my lunch whilst harassing me, and flying off again. Terrifying thought!
