Holothele sp. "Columbia"?

I'm going to be getting one of these later this week:

Holothele sp. "Columbia"

Cool, huh?

I've searched long and hard for some information about them, (burrower? webber? temperment? growth speed? etc.??) but have come up empty handed. Does anyone who owns or has owned this species have any info for me?

They seem to be pretty rare in the hobby at the moment, only one dealer has them now I think... I would love to at some point try breeding this species, because they're really beautiful and apparently not often available... how often do they turn up for sale? Are they usually unavailable or is this just a temporary drought?

Hummm... are you really sure it is that species that you will be getting?? There are different Holothele sp. from Colombia and that one is extremely rare... I have seen no spiderlings offerings recently and they are supposed to be very difficult to breed...

If I had to bet, I would bet that you will be getting Holothele sp. Colombia / Norte de Santander.

Just a thought, if you are getting the real deal, well lucky you then!

The species being sold by SSW is Holothele sp. "Tachira" (Venezuela)... they came CB from Germany. I think you're getting the last one they have left of that stock.

Trust me on this! I've raised slings from the same stock.

I've also bred this species recently myself, and will have some slings for sale soon.

You can see photos of slings and adults in the Genus Holothele thread here on AB and on Martin's site where you saw the "Columbia" photo.

The "Tachira" is pretty cool looking too, I think I'll buy it anyway... although I refuse to give up hope that I'm getting a bright yellow spider for $20 until I hear it from Joel or Jason personally

Eric, thanks, that is what I was thinking... Tachira and Norte de Santander are very similar looking, could be the same species as well (not because they are similar looking, just edited that before I get misinterpreted and flamed! lol)...

Elliot, it is still a very cool looking animal for sure and at that price, a bargain... but honestly, if you want something that looks like the other species, why not just go with a good old Holothele incei?

Well you can buy a H. incei and have a very similar looking spider! I'd personally rather have a sp. "Tachira" anyday... but that's just me. If they would have advertised that spider it would have gone LONG ago.

Does the "Norte de Santader" tend to show more of the "triangle" mark on the carapace? I've wondered about this as the "Tachira" I have showed a hint of this marking while small but this disappeared quickly. I see a hint of it in your "Norte de Santader" photo.

I've seen photos of a species from Trinidad that looks very similar as well... are you familiar?

I have only one Tachira female here unfortunatly, so it is something I cannot really compare with my other females (the picture you see of my Tachira is the only one I have)... also, I had never really paid attention to it except on the Norte de Santander spiderlings I have, before you pointed it! LOL I will look more closely next time I see them...

Are you talking about H. sanguiniceps (fpr the Trinidad species)?? They do look similar as well, I have seen only one (possible) H. sanguiniceps female for real though...

I was shown quite a few specimens from other localities that have not been bred yet as well and they all look similar! LOL I smell a mess coming up if the names of the localities are not kept on the labels... already, in some countries I have seen some sold as sp. Blue" or other names unstead of the localities being mentionned.

These species grow "huge" compared to H. incei... I am not sure if captive bred specimens will grow as big as I have seen... for exemple, my Aragua female that laid eggs (over 120 good eggs) was about three times smaller then the WC females I have seen of the same species and it does not seem to want to grow any bigger...

How big is (are) your Tachira female (s) Eric?? And how many babies in the sac??

And for Elliot, these species do not web as much as H. incei, so you kind of see them more often... although the webbing is also very cool with H. incei...

Hmm, I'd say she's was maybe 3" in DLS (and that's totally stretched out). The male matured, so it was what it was.

I just did a rough count on the slings (still all together, 1st-instar) and there appears to be ~50... not a single bad egg though.

I think I will end up getting a H. incei, it's really nice... next time though... it's twice as much as the "Tachira" and if I don't stay very carefully on budget my girlfriend isn't going to let me get any more spiders ever.
