There are three from Madagascar, the Giant Malagasy Hognose or Checkered Malagasy Hognose like the ones in my pics above is Leioheterodon madagascariensis, then there is also the Malagasy speckled hognose (Leioheterodon geayi) and the Malagasy Blonde Hognose (Leioheterodon modestus).

All are larger than the American counterparts. They're pretty common in the pet trade, though not nearly as common as westerns and easterns.

Yes, they are. Though, they are not considered dangerous to humans at all. I personally have yet to even manage to get one to bite. The malagasy species are supposed to be a little more dangerous, but still not considered threatening. Of course, one can never discount an allergic reaction.

My eastern only gets toads, live or thawed (rodent diet in easterns has been shown to cause fatty liver disease and early demise as mentioned vaguely above) and my malagasys get thawed mice. I usually just place the food in the cage on a plate and it disappears whenever they feel like eating it. Tease feeding like one would do with a python or boa rarely works with any of mine because they get so defensive - its easier on both of us just to let them eat in their own time. If one did have to tease feed, tongs are the way to go. :)

Sorry Ernie! I complimented you and Ravnos on your great snakes earlier on in this thread, but I failed to mention you by name. No offense intended! Good luck with your snakes too!

Some pics for the best snake thread on the boards

what he seems to think his "best angle" is

The flattend neck that anyone who has ever kept these snakes will recognise

A few pics i managed to cath during the rare event of "sitting still whilst not buried"

Some poor pics of the gorgeous patterning and colouration on these snakes

A pic my dad said i should throw in (partly because he took it)(on his Phone which can take better pictures than our actual camera! he looks pretty evil in it

being emo in the corner

Sorry for the Quality

 I want one, but I can't have one in this state, as far as I know.

IL doesn't allow hots, and while hoggies are rear fanged, I'm not going to argue the finer points of the law with some DNR agent trying to seize the rest of my collection.

Also western hognoses are on the specially protected native species list...you need a permit for the snakes on that list.
