Here is my big mutha western hognose. She is the coolest little snake. I'm hoping my males will be big enough to take care of business with her next year. Everyone feel free to post pictures of your own hognose snakes, western or otherwise.

Hey all,
I used to catch these, when I was younger, around 8. I've never purchased one as a pet, now that I'm an adult, as I've heard they MUST have frogs for a complete diet.
Any truth, to this? I know that sometimes, prey needs to be scented with a frog, for reluctant feeders. But, can they live on a rodent diet? Will this be nutritionally complete?

Peace, light & eternal love...

Gillian, most if not all CB Western hognosed snakes will readily eat rodents all their lives. my adult western hog nosed snake is a hisser and striker, but always with a closed mouth, it has never bitten me.
If I remember correctly the eastern hognosed are toad feeders and difficult to switch to a rodent diet, anyone care to add to this?

Nice snakes guys.

Gillian,

I used to find quite a few of them back when I lived in Albuquerque. The area southeast of you has plenty of hognose and Massasaugas as you probably know. Closer to the Rio Grande south of you will find a lot of desert kingsnakes. I've never had a problem with starting out baby western hognoses on pinky mice.
I've never kept eastern hognose snakes, but I know they are tougher to convert to a rodent diet. I've also read somewhere that eastern hognose snakes should be fed amphibians every now and then and not a strictly rodent diet. I'm not sure if that was just the authors opinion or based on scientific fact. I've never found any actually studies on the subject.

OoOoOoO!! Really?! I SO want a Hognose..We had one come in at Clark's, when I was working there. I didn't get it, because the dude in "charge" of the exotics said they die easily and, need amphibians.

thanks!

Someone say hognose? :)

I love hognose. Here are a few of mine.

Mexican hog male

Mexican female

Gee I wonder why they call them hognose? :)

Tri color hog one of my new faves.

And lastly eggs from the tri colors due to hatch around mid to late December. That's one x-mas present I am looking forward too.

On the subject of venom and toad feeding they do have venom but it is considered harmless to humans and swelling is about all it can do to you. It is also very hard for them to inject you in the 1st place and they pretty much have to be allowed to chew on you to do so. They are also very reluctant to bite in the 1st place preferring to hiss and bluff with the occasional closed mouth strike thrown in for good measure. The toad thing has yet to be proven and easterns have been raised on mice but the ones against it suspect liver problems from it. This has yet to be proven though. Easterns are however notoriously tough to get switched to reodents anyway and make far tougher captives than the Western species do.

wow Phil! I like the looks of the tri-colored! are they "easy" to keep like the western? are they hard to find? expensive? readily feed on rodents? tell me more please...............
I did a search and came up with:
www.hognose.com
for those that want to see a site devoted to hognosed snakes.

Easy to keep and feed yes Hard to find yes :)

Not a whole lot of folks have these yet and with Paraguay stopping the export of them in September availibility will drop and price will go up. As it stands before the export ban babies were going for between 250 to 300 a pop.

As far as keeping goes pretty much same as a Western. Eating wise mine go at it like mouse munching machines. Give me a couple of months and i can tell ya how babies feed but from what I've heard they're not a prob either. Worst thing I've heard about babies is they are tiny and you might have to hack off a few legs to feed them till they get some size but they readily take the legs so not really a prob.

Sorry Ernie! I complimented you and Ravnos on your great snakes earlier on in this thread, but I failed to mention you by name. No offense intended! Good luck with your snakes too!

My faves have always been the madagascar hogs... I just don't have the money for the tricolors yet. Madsys are cool, 6' hognose is impressive. :)

Its amazing how much personality they have, and they think they're so big and mean.

Ravnos,

What is the scientific name for the Madagascan Hognose? That is a neat snake. I'll have to keep my eye for them at the next reptile show. I don't recall ever seeing one, but that is probably because I wasn't looking for them.
