Good for you, given that it might as well not be [/B]
Vys, you may be right. This was a freebie I recieved about a month abo. When I received her, she was pretty tattered. I set her up correctly and she was so happy, she molted shortly after. I'm not convinced that it is 100% A. avicularia. This one is just doesn't look like the typical A. avic. Her abdomen is stark black, not a speck of another color. She just doesn't fit well with the A. avics I'm used to. I did forward this pic to some peers for review. It was kinda split. Some think it's a typical A. avic, some aren't sure what she is.
Though, I'm still going to call her an Avic. avic until I send somebody a molt.

I have the same exact thing with my Avic avic. Very aqua in appearance with a purplish mirror patch. I've certainly questioned what exact sp. she may be. You know how Avic taxonomy can be.

John, where are you going to send the molt for taxonomy? If possible, I wouldn't mind doing the same.

Not personally, but I've heard of people who used baby chicks as feeders for tarantulas (mostly larger ones like blondi).

A couple years back I contacted Rick West to examine a couple of molts. He was very gracious and kind enough to inspect them, and even called my home with the results. Perhaps I'll contact him again.

Oh, I'm sorry if it sounded as if I implied that you were wrong about its species. I just meant to say that in the picture, it looks a bit like a Purpurea, or perhaps even a Metallica, as well.
She's beautiful, anyhow. I so like the 'fuzziness' of avics.

Hey Vys, no worries...

I was just saying that I agree with you. I'm not really sure myself (and others I've conferred with) on what it is.
"Good for you, given that it might as well not be"... A. avic., or something else.
Um, forget that I guess I'm not reading you. :)

Cool! Rick did the same for me a few months ago. How cool can he be, huh? I wasn't sure if you had another source or not. Thanks a ton though! :) I have Rick's contact info.

Take care John.

Some other fun facts about Avicularia-

The name "Avicularia" was coined and given to this species by none other than Carlos Linneus, the creator of our modern taxonomic system. I think he had a different generic name, however. It was also the first theraphosid to be given a latin name.

Around this time, an etching depicting a tarantula feeding on a hummingbird created a stir in Europe when it appeared because it seemed to upset "God's order" because invertebrates were not supposed to prey on vertebrates. I think it was the same illustration that inspired Linneus's to create the name.

Lol, that must have been pretty funny :)

Anyway, about Linneaus, I'm happy to hear someone mention him, although you make his name look mexican :D
His name was Carl von Linné, although people outside of scandinavia have a tendency to call him Linneaus.

linneaus was an adopted name. scientists of the time often took adopted names to look more classically roman or intellectual.

Name..:)

Hi all.

Well as a Swede:D, I can say that his name is spelled and written Carl von Linne and also when spoken by Scandinavians and his face appears on the Swedish 100 crowns money bills and his face has been on these bills since very far back when the 100 bill was changed during the 60:ies.
Also on this bill his name is spelled Carl von Linne.

What happened and/or how with his latin appering spelling of his name came around I don't know:)

He did it himself, I think he wrote under the latinzed version. As Garth mentioned, latinizing your name was all the rage at the time, at least among intellectuals. Hell, he must have loved the language...he chose it for his taxonomic system, after all!

Personally I don't why everybody got to talking on Linnaeus on the birdeater thread, somebody might want to talk about it and not even know it's on here. I would never change my name given to me, although he really didn't change his name. If you ask me he was a little excited about his taxonomic system. His own name for god sakes! I guess he couldn't help it. Lariz, great pic.

lets all do it

Hi,,
Yes,, your probably right. Wade:)

They liked to change their names in this fashion way back.

Well, you know "dilleo",,,,sometimes threads do "side-bumps".

Lariz do have a super pic that I liked too,I allways read his posts.

We allways read and exchange our opinions in the post and posts can "side-bump" as I said and go kinda out-of-topic for a second.:)

You should be reading reading the document my link lead to :p

One of the points anyway was that he started using the latinized name when he was knighted.

Anyway, Kenny, that's him on the hundred crown bills? I ..hmm..haven't though about it for a while. I wonder if I ever knew. He has a wig on it, I think. That must have been the rage at that time as well .
