I got this one recently, and the owner of the shop didn't seem to know its scientific name.

Here are a few details I know about it :
  • Origin: Is said to be African species.
  • Appearance: Red bands on a glossy black body.
  • Behavior: Primarily feeding on humus, not interested in veggies.

I suspect this might be Pelmatojulus excisus.

Can anyone confirm this or provide additional insight?

Its odd to purchase a species when the seller doesn’t know…

do you know if its wild caught or not?

it obviously has red color hightlights, which helps narrowing it down.

where did you get this?

it might be illegal to own depending on your local, which probably hints to it being wild caught.

the red to black banding does fit the profile for your suspected identity.. n americanus being the opposite.

The seller is also working as an importer, and it is one of the wild caught species that he imports.
