Hello everyone! I'm new here and to tarantula's. I got my first GBB the other day! She or he is probably 1" long and the legs another 1/2" I'm wondering how old it would be? Or how many molts it would have gone through to get to this size? Would it be a juvenile now?
thanks!

There’s no way to determine age due the variety of factors that affect growth.

juvi is a subjective term, and this is not juvi for most peeps.

i would consider it a juvenile once its legs turn fully green/blue/turquoise instead of cream coloured, but it's just a generalizion based on it's development, and doesn't give you an age or exact size

you can look at the "picture gallery (media) > genus gallery > chromatopelma" to see examples, focus on leg colouration to see the differences

some pictures may have information on the age or number molts of the spider shown, you can compare yours to them and get a rough estimate

Age is irrelevant, always go with DLS (Diagonal leg span) I would class that size as a grown on sling, many would class it as juvenile though.

Atleast under one years age, or over a year. Thats general eh.

what is the diagonal leg span?

molts can happen quickly for a sling if the specs are right.

i have some g pulchripe slings. I got them at around 1/3inch last year. This year they are over 1inch dsl. Thats how much they grew in a year.

now this is generaly a slow growing species, but not in the first molts. Mine molted atleast three times last year.

your tarantula can be quicker then mine, given the right specs.

so it gives you a ball park idea.

you are far from an adult, and possibly getting close to what is called a juvie.

but these terms are so vague and vary from tarantula to tarantula.

a sling, to me, still is very fragile and definitely under 1inch, unless its a very large kind of tarantula.

a juvenile, to me, has crossed from the sling phase. It is now an official mini version of itself, not always with its adult colors. Definitely not a naked looking tarantula.

an adult, to me, has crossed from teenager phase.

i think these terms take more meaning, when a keeper has kept a certain species many times, for many years. It is experience. Many of us lack the “experience of time”. Myself included. No matter how many books I read, experiencing it first hand is something else.

it means different things for many people. It also means it is hard to pinpoint age, unless you have Sac Burst date. That is the only true way to know. If you get tarantula from a breeder, then you can know this.

Okay, great thanks! At least I know it's probably under a year old then. :)
All depends on how it has been kept, if it hast been fed much and kept cooler it could be closer to 2 years, but if fed plenty and kept warm it could be as young as 6 months. There are far to many variables to give you an age. You could contact the seller to see if they bread it, that way you could get a hatch date and work it out from there
