heat?

I had some pedes and I think they died because my room temperatures became too cold overnight so I am planning on trying again. I was going to use a heat lamp but now this thread has me thinking that I should maybe just use heat tape instead. Does anyone have thoughts or experience with either? For what it's worth I live in western Canada, which is hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and generally dry overall.
