when you learn of a tarantula you really want. But find out its illegal to keep. Or there is no way you could get one because the country they are from wont export them?

I was watching TV the other week. And learned of the whistling/barking Tarantula. Or Phlogius crassipes.
But last time I checked... Australia doesn't export animals like tarantula. And that's all right. I was sad about it. But quickly got over it. And accepted that. =)

Has any one else felt something like this?

Lucky you.. P. crassipes IS available in the US hobby. May be an "uncommon" tarantula, but they ARE accessible. Try KTBG or a few members here..
There ARE probably TONS of tarantulas that arent currently available HERE (in the US) but there still are TONS of ts i want to own that ARE. Once i have all of them i will start seeking others

There are a LOT of cool Phlogius sp. that you may want to look at as well. Dont know if they ALL whistle, but they all have stridulatory organs if im not mistaken and some make cool hissing noises

Oh man. Next thing you know... Its gonna happen like how I want ALL the Avics.... Thank you greyzone. XD My mom is gonna hate me now. XD She doesn't mind me keeping Ts. But she doesn't want any more. And she only likes my G.rosea...

Do you have any video links to videos of these Ts making the noises?

Subspinipes gigantea. I've been told time and again that its illegal to own in Canada, even though it doesnt show up on CITES.

Wish someone could make my day:(
If they were not illegal were you are and I had a job... I would buy you one. Really. I would.

You're totally right that Australia doesn't legally export its wildlife. That doesn't mean you can't get it, though! I really want a Phlogius sp. 113. So cool! Like the guys said, a lot of the major T dealers have Phlogius. I saw them on swiftinverts, too.

Usually it means the original ones were. A lot of our most popular pets are from Australia. Budgies (parakeets) and bearded dragons are 2 great examples.

i LOVE being a bad influence{D

In all reality i understand your logic real well.. I want alot, but its NOT in the budget at all. I scrimp and stash a little bit of change/singles/fives every once and a while in some random container by my spider collection. Every once in a while, when the jar is getting full, i think of buying some adult that i want... Usually end up getting slings .. raising them is half the fun

Either way, thats what the ol wishlist thread is for.. i think its fun to go back to it every couple of months and see how much my wants and opinions have changed lol.. Always wanting somethin different:sarcasm:

The issue is trying to get my mom to let me get more spiders....

You're totally right that Australia doesn't legally export its wildlife. That doesn't mean you can't get it, though!
So the story goes... Some years back Steve Nunn of Australia took the time of breeding multiple generations of the Australian tarantulas, and endured the extensive legal work with the Aussie government to legally export some of his CB native tarantulas to the U.S. and a few other countries. He no longer exports, so whatever Australian species we have here now, is all we will see. It seems like Chris Allen (syndicate) and I were the only 2 people who took the time to raise and breed those spiders that Steve exported as, virtually all the Australian spiders on the U.S. market originated from one of us. Unfortunately, the Selenotypus, & Selenotholus that were imported didn't do so well (in my collection at least) and are most likely extinct in the U.S. hobby now. That pretty much leaves us with a variety Phlogius (and C. tropix) species that you see for sale.

Until the other day, I've never heard one of my Phlogius sp. "whistling spiders" produce any sound. They would far rather run down their burrow than stand there ground hissing and drooling venom. While photographing Phlogius sp. "goliath" the other day, I guess I finally made it angry enough to stridulate at the camera. I was impressed.

Since we will no longer have Australian imports, The rattlesnake tarantula that greyzone posted a video of is a spider I wish I could have , but never will, they're so cool.
Later, Tom
