Hello,
i get 2 Heteroscodra maculata 6th-7th instar soon. I am new to african/baboon aboreals (i already keep fussorial and terrestrial baboons) so i'd like to ask you guys to check my planed husbandry and enclosure.

The cups are 4.5 inch high and diameter is 3.5 inch, filled like 1/3 with sub (see pictures). Dunno what exact size they gonna be, only know the instar.
There should be plenty of ventilation, holes are 2mm diameter.

I am gonna overflow the waterdish (which is still missing in the pictures) but keep the sub dry apart from that. Good idea?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Some of those vent holes look pretty big... Could lose a spider or a leg in them.
I always preferred to use pin hole sized ventilation holes, reduces the chance of injury and escape.

Also, they don't need nearly as much Substrate as you're providing.

hm ok thank you!

edit: do you think those holes in the cups posted by the grym reaper are too big as well? https://arachnoboards.com/threads/c...sure-dilemma-input-needed.337480/post-3096574
it seems to be the same size, i can barely stick a fake plants stalk through it (like in the picture of grym reaper).
i never had problems with 2mm holes, even with smaller slings then 6th instar.
sorry, i'd never doubt your experience and knowledge, but could the holes look bigger then they are?

nevermind, i'll get new cups.

edit: new version:

thanks again

If it’s available you can place some plastic mesh screen over the outside of the holes if you’re concerned about the size correlation between the hole and the spider. I do this regularly to reuse enclosures and never had a problem.

Oh, and I forgot to mention @quirinus, obtaining H. macs (plural) demonstrates a level of awesomeness to which few in this world can aspire.

I’ve owned this species - give them more things to hide under, less sub!, and taller vertical space- they are quite fast

thank you. i dunno if i understand the 2nd part of your post, even with translator. please say that again in easier words (especially without the term aspire, please :))

thanks! i already put them in, they already made them a home during the night. one burrowed to the ground. i will leave it like this for now, and see how it is going. but next enclosure with more vertical space and more things to hide.
During rehouse they were quite calm.

Those are basically pinholes that were widened with the end of a toothpick, no bigger than 1mm in diameter.

The holes with the plant stems through them are made wider to accommodate the stems but they're sealed (I melt the end of the stem with a lighter and push it flat against the cup to seal it in place).

ok thanks for your reply, i am going to stick to pinholes. You convinced me.. I am just worried about ventilation, because you can't messure it somehow and you can only wait and see if it is enough..

You don't need to go mental with holes, I keep saying this but where you put the holes is more important than how many, all of the enclosures below have just a single row of holes above sub level on 3 sides and holes in the lid (28 holes in total), as warm air exits through the top it pulls fresh air through the lower holes which keeps air moving throughout the whole enclosure (this is exactly how Exo Terra/Euro glass enclosures work), I've raised Pokies/Psalmos/Ornithoctoninae in them without issue.

Non Avic setup 3.jpg

Even those Avic sling enclosures from the other thread only have around 45 holes in them (row all around abow sub level, row all around near the top, a few holes at mid-height, and about a dozen in the lid).

Ok. I knew that about the airflow. But it is good to know that a small number of holes is fine if they are placed correctly.

Looks good just keep it pretty much dry maybe mist the opposite half of the enclosure from where the T's are to get a little water available, also keep a water bottle cap water dish if possible.
