How big do they get? How would you compare them to a G. Rosea?

Reason Im asking, is because I'm thinking of getting one, I read and seen pictures, they look so beautiful. But is it true, that they aren't really Blue colored, but instead Brown or Orange?

Well here's the pic of a female:

They are completely opposite of a rosie. They usually burrow right to the bottom of the container, whereas a rosie usually stay on top. They tend to have one of the worst attitudes out there. They actually eat unlike a rosie. H. lividum gets a little larger than a rosie.

Hope that helped.

Okay, when they burrow, how do they do it? Using what? (I want to gather as much info)

They actually eat is a good thing, My G. Rosea barely eats, maybe 3 a month?

Yes, the info you gave helps alot.

similar to a dog except they carry the dirt out of the hole instead of kicking it.

Btw, from all the posts I have read on H, lividum, I understand that their general behavior is that of pet hole - you never see them, pretty much. That is, if you let them burrow and it would be inhumane to prevent them form digging :).

If you stopped them from burrowing the only thing you could do is keep them in a smaller container and in the dark most of the time. If you dont try harder to make them feel safe, especially out of a burrow they are going to get really stressed out and that might even lead to death at some point.

The ones I've owned would come out at night when everything was dark and still, but otherwise, yeah, a pet hole with a bad temper.

bitey, good eaters, blue shows up in bright light mostly, which they hate ;).

also, they are very reclusive - a friend of mine hasn't seen his in nearly two years!

if you only ever owned a rosea, you might have difficulties with a t as defensive as a cobalt blue. they are fast and tend to bite when you try to rehouse them or something like that. i don't say don't get it - but you should be aware that it is more difficult to deal with than a rosea.

My H. lividum seldom ever comes out, I haven't seen here in a few months now. They aren't generally friendly either and have a pretty severe venom from what I've read in the bite reports. If your relatively new to tarantula's I'd proceed cautiously and like someone had said earlier they are pretty much pet holes. If you like the colors you may also consider something like Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens that has awesome colors as well. Whatever you decide good luck.

Does anyone know where to buy an H. Lividum? I've searched Petsmart, Petco, and several small Pet stores, but none carry them, Any other places can search?

I guess I can call my self lucky my H Lividum has the oppitunity to burrow. With a pre started hole, but has adopted her cage as a burrow. She's compleatly webbed up a cornor but is always in sight. Haplopema are all bite first ask questions later, so you'll have to deal with the temperment. An most will burrow during daylight but come out at night. If your not up to see it too bad. Finding a seller shouldn't be hard check the web and ask even some of the better stores that have T's some will place a order for you.

Where are you located? Depending on where you are there maybe a dealer nearby or someone on the boards may know a shop near your location that may carry them. Also if you are in Canada thats a whole set of different then there are canadian dealers. Occasionally, Petco carries them but they cost twice what what you should pay for them. (Petsmart as company policy doesn't carry inverts at least in the N.E.)

I maybe wrong but the way things sound you are relatively new to t keeping? If so I would avoid the H.lividum for now, for a whole set of reasons, not the least of which is they are not a very interesting spider (beautiful, yes, but if you only see it rarely whats the point).

If you are looking to to get in to old worlders I say start with a P.murinus. If you want blue then get an A.versicolor sling. If you are into pet holes a C.crawshayi at least is a constantly moving pet hole. Depending on what you're looking for there are a whole host of different ts that are more interesting 9or so I think) that can fill the criteria you have set.

Though if you have your heart set on one get it but be warned, you may never see it once burrowed. That and it is very much different than a rosie.

Good luck on whatever you decide.

Yeah, I honestly wouldn't recommend H. lividum to anyone who hasn't ahd at least 3 spiders for a year or two. My T. guide book says:
"Haplopelma lividum [...] often are dangerously aggressive and make poor pets for any but an experienced specialist."

however, if you really want one, you can look at the store reviews/for sale sections here. You could get a 4" female from Kelly here for just $60, which is damn cheap, I think.
