do you have any further suggestions with regards to the bottle cap dillema?
Not really... Either dig it out constantly, dig it out occasionally, hose 'em down regularly, or some combination of all. Whatever keeps you in good conscience. I gave up on water dishes for these years ago.
Have been threatening to do another vivarium setup, tried once but it was too compact and they quickly filled up the pond and plowed everything else under.

My H. gigas is one of my favorites, although in it's first cage I went for more than a year without seeing it. In it's current cage (which it graduated to when it outgrew the smaller one) I see it regularly because it has excavated a burrow that runs along all sides of the cage. It doesn't often emerge from the burrow, but I can watch it inside its burrow. As a small tarantula it NEVER emerged from its burrow as far as I could tell. As a large tarantula it spends most of its time underground, but sometimes comes up on the surface. But at the slightest disturbance it dives for cover.
