Ok, some of you won't find this very exciting... but I sure did.

Yesterday, while driving through Saskatchewan, I saw two wild wolves!!

Probably an alpha pair and they were field hunting and looking very wolfish.

And SO beautiful. I have lived in wolf territory my entire life and never seen anything but tracks. This has always been my favorite social animal and I've been looking for them as long as I can remember.

Wow, it was awesome. And so easy to instantly be able to tell they weren't coyotes - just everything about them - the way that they moved, their build - everything.

Anyway, that's my news. :) I wish I had pictures to share!

Ohhhh!

I love wolves, they're so pretty. My neighbor used to have a domesticated wolf, he was really sweet! Yes, it was a wolf, not a husky or anything. His name was Tyler and he had the bluest eyes! He'd follow me home after school :) I miss him...

Anyway, congrats!

Seems pretty exciting to me! I get a thrill when I see the occasional fox, so seeing wild wolves would probably make my head spin.

Shoot, who am I kidding? I get a kick out of seeing wild skunks, raccoons, possums, deer, squirrels, most inverts, all reptiles and amphibians, and
most mammals except for mice and rats. I hate mice and rats. The non-domestic kind, that is.

Thanks! :)

I'm the same way. I even like seeing roadkill - out of sheer interest (not because they're dead.)

Cool, congrats Its great that you got to see an unfortionatly rare animal in the wild. My brother is in college to become a wolf field researcher so I hope to see some one day. I wish we could reintroduce more wolf populations without people killing them because of a few lost livestock.

Very very very cool! Where we live we get to encounter coyotes which is also exciting. I once happened upon three of them in the desert. Luckily Coyotes fear humans. Once they saw me they took off pretty fast.

Ok first problem you were driving through Saskatchewan and you were awake?? When I lived in Sask. the most exciting thing on the highway was roadkill. {D First thing is theres maybe 10-20 curves in the road from Alberta border all the way to Regina. The road is largerly straight and flat. Oh and being a good previous Saskatchewanian I must ask did you see "the moose"?

No, because we took the yellowhead to Edmonton, then to Saskatoon on the way back. :)

Yeah, it's not the most exciting road trip ever, I admit, but the wolves more than made up for it. :D

That drive through the praries is BRUTAL!!! The only time I did it was when I was on tour last year. We just closed the drapes to all the windows and watched movies the entire way unless we were stopping for a bathroom or food break.

Later on in that trip, a VERY large moose attacked the bus at 3am while we were driving through northern Ontario. I was on moose lookout and downing coffee while keeping my eyes on the road when the giant ran out of the forest and right at us. Luckily we didn't hit it (and it didn't hit us) but it was the first time the driver had seen one and he was pretty shook up by it!! {D {D

Back on topic.....a friend of mine has a dog that's half wolf. He's an amazing dog. During the summers, I'll drive over and take him for a walk sometimes. Beautiful animal. Never seen them in the wild though!

Wow!!!!

I've been really wanting to see wild moose - I haven't since I was a little girl, also in Ontario, though we have a pretty decent population in Manitoba.

We're taking a trip up north in October to see the polar bears - I hope we'll be able to see wolves along the way. We're not sure of our numbers here, but the estimates at this time are about 15,000. (wolves)

I think that many species in the states are endangered or protected. Is this the case in Canada. In Alaska, the gray wolf is thriving, or so I have read. I know that I have never seen one. Lucky enough to see a fox.

Well, now I know.

The eastern grey wolf, Canis lupus lycaon, is designated as a "special concern" - but not endangered.

Canada, of course, is larger than the US, and much less population dense, especially as you travel north.

Farmers and ranchers here, generally, have always been more accepting of them, but this is largely (probably) due to the larger range we have.

:)

When I lived outside the city, I spent hours trailing fox with my dogs... and used to see them at least a few times a week. Since I move back to the city though, I think I've only seen them twice, and once was in December. Also beautiful animals, but they don't have the same effect on me as wolves do. Must be the power factor. ;)

Yea, I figured their decline in the states vs. alaska was due to Homo sapiens himself. It is crazy what different info I have read on the topic online. From hunting, which seems the most logical, to poisoning?
Thanks!
