I have used Grreat Choice (Petsmart) aspen wood shavings 2 cubic ft. (56.6 L) for awhile in my millipede enclosures. It has always had minimal odor when wet and decaying for a while. I bought a new bag and it smells more fruity but to me it does not smell like pine or cedar. I am concerned that it is contaminated with a coniferous species. Some people say it smells this way based on the way it was kiln dried. Maybe the two bags were kiln dried in different ways? For longer time periods? Maybe it is a different species of aspen? I believe there are two aspen species in the US and maybe the older bags were a different species? Not sure... The millipedes seem fine after a couple months. I took the bag back and removed all of the aspen from the enclosures. I then got a newer bag to see if it does the same thing and added this to the enclosures. Does anyone use aspen and if so does it have a bit of a fruity odor to it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
