I am planning on getting a green tree python and our local pet store is selling a juvenile female for 375, now is that a decent price or should I look elsewhere. I am looking into buying it and I just want to know if that is a reasonable price. Thnx. Peace.

I dont think thats a bad price for a pet store. The nice thing about buying it from them is that you get to see it before you buy it. Ask them if its captive bred and to feed it in front of you before you buy it.

Going rate is from around 350 to 450 for established, healthy snakes. Captive born are obviously going to be on the higher end of the scale. If you're paying less I would really wonder why - what the condition of the animal is, how long its been in captivity, is it even feeding... etc. If I was spending spending that kind of money on an animal, I'd be damn sure it was absolutely perfect before forking over. :)

There are always deals to be had at shows, so those are not always a good judge of going prices. Sometimes people just don't want to have to take the animal home again. :)

A green tree boa eh? Hmmm....not really familiar with those but ive heard they have a nasty temper. Wouldnt really matter to me. Makes eating live food more exciting. lol. you should buy your python a parakeet.

Or even better!

Make a survivor TV show about parakeets, that have to survive in a tree boa enclosure. lol. They might end up eating your python. Would you feed it a bird? I think that could get expensive but every few months, you could try it.

Anyway, its just my opinion, but I wouldnt get one. If it ends up being a runty sick snake, youd be out 350.

A couple of things you to ask them before you purchase. Does the petstore know her exact age? Are they keeping a good feed record on her, ask to see it. Many people always claim that the animal ate for them. Is she wild caught or captive bred (very important) Captive bred is always better (you don't have to deal with as many health issues or problems with eating). If she is wild-caught ask how long she has been in captivity (the longer in captivity the better). Don't buy a fresh import unless you are experienced. Is she well acclimated. Stress will lead to other problems. Will this be your first chondro? If so I would opt for an established animal, preferably captive bred. Sometimes you can have good luck with an imported animal. A lot of times you don't. Are you prepared to spend the time and money required to get an animal on tract if you run into health problems (especially parasites). Cheap is not always better. The deal you get may end up costing you more than what a captive animal would. I'm not saying that the animal at the store is not healthy. I'm saying do your research. Learn everything you can about chondros and when you think you know everything, learn more. I bought my first chondro for 350 but I knew what to expect. The dealer said it was eating and I knew it wasn't, but I was willing to take the risk. After tons of tries and a lot of patience he ate for me and has become a healthy adult. This time around I spent a little more cash when I bought his mat. She ate off the bat and has not given me any trouble. Good luck. Here's a site that has a lot of info on GTPS: www.chondroweb.com

Is pets inc a chain store like walmart, where there are multiple stores in each area, or a little private shop where they are a bit smaller and take more exclusive care of their pets???

I would never buy a tropical snake from a chain store. I never forget the time I walked into Petco and saw a cage with a dead ball in it, and they expect people to buy other balls from a cage, with dead pythons in it for $65.00

versus

A small shop in my area called Pets n Things, is an exotic store that breeds almost all of their own animals, and if a animal didnt come from them, it came from a responsible breeder.

So I suggest thinking more about health before you buy. Learn how to look for parasites, respiratory infections, and check how they keep it there. (if you havent already learned that stuff)
