I think RCF stands for Red Chilean Fire, the red color phase of the Chilean Rose Hair, G. rosea. Some do not agree that they are a race of G. rosea, and think they are a different species because there seems to be a behavior difference in terms of aggressiveness. The current taxonomy has them as the same species.

If the two kinds are not reproductively isolated from each other, it supports them being the same species.

There is no isolated reproductive mechanism between the two color phases of G.rosea, they are definately the same species. Rick West reported that both of these color phases can be found in the same sac.

Since we're talking about it........ was Grammostola rosea formerly called Phrixotrichus spatulata? If so, then perhaps it is time to update the Schultz Tarantula Keeper's Guide. If not, then these look EXACTLY like rosies.

Hi Kell,
Yep, both P.roseus and P.spatulata were pulled into synonymy as Grammastola rosea. At the moment G.cala is in synonymy with G.rosea, but it needs to be reinstated as it's own species (info from Rick West). Prior to 1961 it was in synonymy with G.spatulata, until Schiapelli & Gerschman pulled it out the first time. In 1998 Gunter Schmidt synonymised it again with G.rosea and here is where it sits a present, waiting to be corrected.

Cheers,
Steve
