Hey all, I was transferring my newly acquired P. ornata (5") female today & she tagged me on my pinky. This was (is) the most excruciating pain I have ever felt! I still want to acquire more pokies though.
I posted it in the bite reports section. I ws just wondering if anyone else had similar experience?

Um..I think the P. ornata gives one of the most significant bites. RobC / tarantulaguy1976 has a youtube video post of his P. ornata bite. He went to the hospital. I would go to if I were you.

Well I am a nurse and I did call the ER to speak with a very well trusted DR, am following his advise . I only live 3 minutes from there so if Ineed to I will go. He even called to check on me after our call.
I did see Robc video & read about it in the bite section on here when I posted mine, looks like he got alot worse than me.
FYI the Dr told me that taking the benadryl within seconds of getting bit did a lot to lessen the venom affects!

Well that's good. I'm glad to hear so far so good. I've never been bitten nor do I want to be...lol. I've heard about using benedryl too. Guess it should be a staple all us T owners need to have on hand.

It really scared me because I'm allergic to bee stings. I have def gotten a stromger respect for the T's now.

wow, I just rehoused my P.Ornata litterally 20 minutes ago. Luckily I didnt get tagged, however, my O.B.T. was trying her best to see how I tasted. I'm going to read your bite report as well as the other guys. Im always extra careful around my P.Ornata and P.Regalis.

I've been tagged once, not nice at all, felt like red hot needles being jabbed into my finger. Plunging it into ise cold water did the trick though. Something i dont want to repeat

Or even better "in my case" dont poke the t with a bare fingerr to get it to move
Yes! That would significantly increase your odds of getting bit!!

Probably a silly question, but why not wear thick leather groves? : )
Don't gloves increase your clumsiness?

I don't think there is a lot the hospital could do other than give you pain meds. If you were allergic I would definitely have published because it is extremely rare. I will be purchasing some benadryl though very soon!

Thick gloves are cumbersome, but even more than that, they either won't keep a fang from penetrating (not thick enough), or it could lead to broken fangs if it's too strong. I've never heard of it happening, but I imagine it is a possibility if the gloves are thick or strong enough to repel tarantula fangs.

And have you had an attempted bite with them?
Yes. The glove appeared to deter the T from biting. I also use 3 to 4 foot .25 inch wooden rods for touching my T's on the end of the abdomen if they escape. I am able to move them into a container this way. I also have some 3.5 foot needle nose pliers for getting things out and putting things in enclosures. They come in handy when I am trying to get stuff out or in my Scolopendra, Poecilotheria or Theraphosa enclosures.

What do you mean by deter? Did it bite and the glove physically kept the fangs from penetrating without damaging them? If yes, what species and at what size?

It was a 4 inch B. Smithi. I am not sure if it actually bite the glove. It appeared like it was going to bite and then when it encountered the rough leather it did not...but not totally sure.

Generally P.ornatas are quite aggressive ,this is the only pokie of mine which gives threat poses and tries to bite . I always take caution when feeding, maintaining and re housing this specie.
