i think this is a somewhat entrenched and bogus concept in invertebrate handling. i hope almost everything i own at some point, and to date have been envenomated by one Anuroctonus scorpion. Look it up to find out why that is funny.
I have held giant centipedes, adults and young of multiple species.
I have handled young OBT, psycho G. rosea. i have held all my scopions including young C. ecilicauda, adult C. vitattus, young B. jacksoni, adult Hardrurus.
I have never injured a captive bug i was handling, and to memory have only injured 2 of the 25-30 giant centipedes i've hand caught, no deaths.
I hold individuals, not species, if you know what i mean. Each individual has their own "personality", although that is a bad name for it. As long as i have estimated an individual to be a reasonable risk, i will handle.
