I recently have regaining my interest in arachnids though I have never kept one. I have been really interested in purchasing a scorpion that would be good for beginners (as the thread title screams). I do not have much space in my room but can make some space. I'm also more interested in getting myself either some type of desert scorpion or a "forest, semi-rainforest" scorpion (like an African Flat Rock Scorpion, I'm probably wrong about it but I just barely started committing into getting myself a scorpion). I would prefer a small scorpion, or a large one that doesn't require much space. If I left anything out then you may tell me so hopefully you can help me choose my very first pet arachnid!

+1 on Smeringurus mesaensis. Also, Vaejovis confusus and Hoffmanius spinigerus are pretty cool, too. They are smaller and very active, always sting their prey, and they are pretty much harmless. They are also super easy to care for.

Smeringurus mesaensis is a dune scorpion and Vaejovis confusus are usually called yellow ground scorpions.

You should not need the common names for looking up information. Use the boards here for care information since "care sheets" are a pile of garbage.

What species for handling when emperor scorpions are rarer than hen's teeth?
I honestly would not recommend handling scorpions. It could harm you or your scorpion and they do not like it. In fact, it stresses them out. Scorpions are more or less like a fish; mainly just a sit-and-watch pet.

You could try a full grown Hadrurus arizonensis. They're a bit tricky to raise when they're still growing but easy as adults.

He said he wanted a smaller one, or a large one that doesn't require a lot of space. While I agree with you that Hadrurus arizonensis is a great species, they're happiest in a larger enclosure whre they can build tunnels. Smeringurus mesaensis does not need as much.
