I know someone that used to say everything he sold was cb by him(i wont mention the name) just to get a sale. Imo the odds are likely theyre wc, wc spiders can have issues unheard of with cb stock and anything could have been wrong. T. blondi are especially hard to get a viable sack from without them eating it, but they seem easy to breed, so maybe its possible someone did breed them, or more likely captive hatched. I know people have tried to breed them for years and years and have since given up at their misfortune, not an easy thing to accomplish at all.

This is all too common a strategy. When I was first into reptiles (before there was much captive breeding being done) it was common for people to claim the animals they were selling were "long-term captives", even if they had only been captured/imported a week or two earlier. As long as cb animals command a higher price than wc, there will be people making false claims in order to make more money.

Hopefully the original poster knows the "breeder" well enough to be able to know whether or not to trust their word. And - even though cb adult blondis are very unusual, they are possible, and I'm certainly not in a position to tell the OP that they are right or wrong in trusting the breeder she got the spiders from.

CB or not, at this point it doesn't really matter. The necessary care at this moment is the same either way.
I didnt mean toi get sucked into the cb/wc issue last night, and went to bed as soon as this reply was posted . . .

How ARE the blondies doing?

I just have such a love for blondies that I hate to see threads like this, and I do get a little bothered and upset.
Especially when the person posting about them just joined and has less than 10 posts and theyre all about sick blondies.

IMO, the T. blondie(cb or wc) should only be kept by someone who has lots of experience keeping other species and WCs alive.
They are just a really sensitive species, and it dont take much for things to go south quickly.

Im sorry, but threads such as this are the reason T blondie is being taken from the wild in such huge #s, and also why people are importing 800 at a time.
Does everybody realize the time and effort it would take to make sure everyone of even 500 wc blondies are healthy?
Everybody wants the "goliath birdeater", but they all usually end up dying.

That all being said, I do have one of those CB blondies that are being called "burgandy", I paid as much for that 2" CB as I did my 9" WC.
But, both mine are still alive and friggen better stay that way, what with the amount of effort I give them.

And Im not saying Im the foremost expert either, but I learned quick, not afraid to try, and have been successful with my Ts so far.

And to the OP, I am not attacking you or criticizing your knowledge and/or husbandry.
This same thread comes up like 2-3x a month.

The argument here really is not about cb/wc, but how to get your Ts better.
Did you gently prod them to see if they are alive?
Are they?
If they are, what are you going to do next?
I hope your next step is to put them in an ICU setup and keep them wet/warm.

*** I myself LOVE to get WC animals . . .

Hey Pacmaster. I never took what you were saying sensitively or as an attack. Honestly, I have owned only 6 tarantulas in my life, and felt I was ready for a Goliath, but I personally have more experience with reptiles. I have had problems with WC reptiles, and I know how many people ARE liars about all of that. It really is a shame.

Today I went into the cages, and both of them are completely stiff. Neither have moved in almost 5 days now. No wiggle or tremor, just stiff. What's weird is one of them, I flipped her over, and after a few minutes when I glanced back, her legs were under her, even though she was completely stiff prior. I feel this means that the end has come for these girls. I feel horrible because I did the best I could with them, kept them moist with lots of bedding, places to hide, burrows. I thought I was doing right by feeding rodents, but I think you guys are right. Being fed rodents at the pet store for god knows how long, and then being moved to a new place.

Thanks for all the help, guys, but I sadly have to say goodbye to my girls. And next time I know to get one from a reputable breeder and at a young age to ensure CB.

Thanks for all the help.

Yea, this is really sad. I had such an emotional attachment to the one of them that even though I only had her for a month, I feel like I lost a very special pet. I know I did everything I could and tried my best, and that's the most important thing in the long run.

Well, you gave it your best. While luck was not with you this time around, it's obvious that you're the type of person who will learn from an experience like this and continue to move forward. Good luck on future endeavors!!!

I had a similar thing with CB and WC's. I went to a reptile expo to buy an H. Lividum from a reputable dealer who is actually on arachnoboards. Anyway I bought the cobalt blue for 55$, it was an adult female and was CB. After buying I then looked around at other booths to see what they were selling. I see this one shady looking dealer and walk up. He was selling several tarantulas that were unlabeled. They were all very cheap, almost to cheap, I was able to identify an adult female H. minax for sale and guess the price... 15$ dollars. That is way to cheap, they normally go for 50 or 60$, I was sceptic for that reason and I ask the dealer if they were CB or WC. He then hesitated and said "ummm... they... were... captive for two months now." i was like "ok" and walked away. LOL i mean whats that supposed to mean, that his drawn out way of saying, oh that things gonna die in a week or two. Comment what you think, I think it sucks that beginners get sucked to the WC because of their low prices.:embarrassed::embarrassed::embarrassed::embarrassed::embarrassed::embarrassed::embarrassed::embarrassed::embarrassed::embarrassed:

Im suprised I missed this thread back when it was happening. Not that it matters now becuase the spider is dead, and it was a year and a half ago, but since my name has been brought up several times I will offer my comments. I have sold this store CB T. blondi that I hatched , a few other members of this forum have them from that store , that came from me. So yes it is possible for a pet store to have CB blondi. In fact they have had CB G. rosea from me. If I heard a store had CB G. rosea I would be doubtful as well, but in this case its true.

With that said , the store does get there share of imports in as well. Its very likely that something could of got mixed up, or the person selling them was informed. There is a simple way of knowing now, if the OP has a picture of the spider. I hatched the real T. blondi. If the spider was a T. stirmi it was most likely a WC import. The time line for this dosent seem to add up though, by the time this was posted Im sure the blondi that I sold them were all gone. Its possible it could of been mine, but I'd put my money on it being a WC T. stirmi ;)

Later, Tom
