So I picked this guy up today at an expo. But Ive heard of the species before and it seems unclear if it is, in fact, a species of its own. Does anyone have any good information or resources regarding this?

Keep like any other avicularia...can you post a closer up pic? I bought a "Giant Pink Toe" or something labelled similar about a month ago that I suspect is Avicularia M2 or braunshausensi so I'd like to compare the pictures if possible

Looks a little better but not enough to tell…can you take a pic with the lid off?

If you haven’t kept other avics, read the pink link under @viper69 profile. Trust that advice, it’ll keep your avics alive and well. I think this is probably what I have, but still can’t tell. Maybe you can tell from the pic I linked if they look similar?

Theres more blue/green on mine than there is on yours, and more pink visible on the feet. Id rather keep the lid on now but when I rehouse it tomorrow Ill try to get a better shot.

Avicularia braunshauseni became a nomen dubium with the last major Avic revision and lost it's full species status. They're now classified as a morphotype of Avicularia avicularia, specifically it's now Avicularia avicularia M2.

One important thing to realize though is just because they were taxonomically downgraded this time, doesn't mean they won't regain full species status in the future and they should be kept genetically separate from the other Avic avic morphotypes (should you look into breeding in the future).

I have 0.0.3 at the moment and they were my first Avicularia sp. I'm no expert, so I can't tell you how to definitively ID them at the different stages of their growth. Maybe @viper69 will impart a little bit of wisdom in that regard.

This may be bs, but I saw someone post pictures of both M2 and braunshauseni on fb and insist they were different species. The pictures looked slightly different but still relatively similar. I’m not gonna breed mine but she’s pretty

It's still a possibility. Some of the Avicularia lost species status simply because the original type specimens didn't exist or couldn't be located (you can't do a comparison between potential species if you can't confirm the species you have are the species you have). I'm not going to use Facebook taxonomy though lol, I'm more then content to wait until someone takes Fukushima and Bertani's work further and publishes.

What's an easy way to sex these? My local store has some but they are in those deli cups and usually difficult to view properly...

It’s VERY clear if you read the literature!!! Research research!!

what do you need to know? I’ve raised these before. It is a morphotype for now. DO NOT BREED THESE WITH ANYTHING ELSE!

Don’t rely on a pic two to ID Avics, only a few species can be done this way.

digital cameras, their algorithms, etc can make the same, angle of light etc etc etc!! Make Avic look like a different specimen. I took pics of the same specimen many years ago to prove that point.

too many new peeps do this foolish mistake.
This morphotype, and A. avic fool a lot of people. But subtle differences can easily tell them apart

Ive looked through your pink toe guidelines before, so I think I am good on that for now. It was just the taxonomy that was unusual.

What I was told was Braunshauseni is from Santarém
Mt2 is from Tucuruí
These places are around 1000km apart.

I haven't read it all but this article is very helpful as well

Looks very similar to mine. Make sure it has a water dish and decent ventilation. Mine got a little dehydrated but perked back up.

I got permission to use these pics.

8B02C31E-9241-4AF7-81A0-061A4EE7CCC7.jpeg braunshauseni, from Santarém

AF74FFC2-8962-4F20-8F4A-A7B3F56E32A9.jpeg morphtype 2, from Tucuruí

I can’t vouch for the credentials of the person who shared these with me, but my own internet researching has agreed with this.
