heh - thats some funny reading on that board - I liked the post what went "some people actually keep these as pets!"

The post about the spider with an "18 inch leg" also made me chuckle.

I might have a look round the other posts if I can be bothered - these people seem quite amusing

cheers,

Stu.

I was a bit bothered by all that Bull's Hit in that board.

The ones stu mentioned and the one saying the T.Blondi doesn't eat birds..... Someone show them that pic of the parahybana eating a Chick please!!!!

Can someone post a link to the boards so those poor ignorants can actually know what they're talking about???????

da_illest...

Thank you so much for making sure their first exposure to real Tarantula facts was accompanied by condecension and confrontation.

In the future, please remember that type of lip only makes you appear to be an arrogant punk, especially towards a group like that... telling an entire group of people they don't have a clue is not the best way to begin to educate them.

For examples on how this situation is best handled in a mature and helpful manner, please see monantony's post directly below your own. THAT is how you broach the subject with arachnophobes and the uneducated...

That thread was pretty funny... This is one of me favorite quotes from there:

" I've heard of huge trantulas but they were in the amazon desert."

Basement spiders are the biggest in north america i think. Mostly found in Canada. I've never seen one but they're supposedly the size of someone's head and they're dark black

=D Man! I hope I don't have one of these in my basement!!!

you know u eat like 10 spiders a year or something like that a year in your sleep, they go into your mouth as you sleep, u know when you waker up and your mouth is realy dry well thats cuz you eat a spider
I ate a spider in my sleep? =D

Amazon Desert?? Is that possible?=D

Those were rather amusing to read.:D I'm glad that some our members were nice enough to provide them with some pictures and "facts" about the wonderful world of Tarantulas!

I understand what you mean. It's easy to get offended by what others say you just have to remember they're speaking from fear, misunderstanding, and inexperience.
If there happens to be a person that is still being rude and making offensive comments just to upset others then I say "well, it's a matter of opinion and yours doesn't count.";P =D

No harm done... just be mindful in the future that you'll catch far more flies with honey than vinegar. ;)

I spent a while trying to find a story I read a few years back about a huge spider. The guy who wrote it said it happened in Vietnam during the war. It seems he and his buddies were driving through the jungle in their APC (armoured personnel carrier) and they heard the guy up top shooting his gun so they popped their heads up and he was shooting at a spider. He'd done it in a panic and missed and was screaming "Stop! Stop!" so they stopped. They guy said it was hanging in a web and it was as big as a toilet seat. They decided to go around it because they didn't want it to end up on the vehicle with them. I don't know if it was true, if he was exagerating, or if he made it up but it was so damn funny my stomach was hurting I was laughing so hard.

You know alot of those stories might be true. I'm not suggesting that there are spiders the size of toilet seats but when people are frightened/startled by something they tend to "see" it larger than it actually was. Fear has a way of distorting the reality of the situation. Also if they were exposed to stories of giant spiders in the jungle, the subconscience will "fill in" images they see as "larger" even if it is actually a normal sized tarantula. It's like people telling stories of a "lake monster" and when they see a log or another animal they're not familiar with in the water, they will perceive it as a "lake monster" only because they have a need to believe the story.

I"m astounded by the sheer misinformation on there, and have no clue how to even begin to educate....so I"m not touching this one!
What is so strange is that I was SEVERELY arachnophobic, but I don't remember exaggerating like some of the stuff that I have been reading...it's quite frightening!

I agree. What I think is astounding is the need to exaggerate the story so the story teller is made to look like a hero! Haven't we all met that one person that likes to tell the "whoppers" of a story. I don't know if I should be offended because they think I'm that stupid or if I should feel sorry for them for being dumb enough to think other people buy it.

i couldn't agree with you guys any more! and i understand what you guys meen how i shouldn't really be to bothered with other people are talking without really knowing or having an understanding of what they're talking about, to the point where i'll actually get upset... i've taught my parents the ways of spiders and even some of my relatives in argentina south america where no one really has t's as pets, instead they're afraid of them and kill them when they see them... my grandfather says he once saw one feeding on a animal, i think it was a bird or something... he said it was pretty big....

oh yeah.. and they all seem to be concentrated near the north where it's hot... they're seen pretty often.. and now that i own a couple, i can't wait to go to my country on vacation to see them and follow them to they're burrows maybe get a better understanding... who knows, if the law permits it, i might bring one back!
