My 2 Furballs

Here are "Simon" and "Max", my 2 Bernese Mountain Dogs. Simon is going on 8, and Max just turned 2.

Both are spoiled rotten, but how can you resist faces like that? They've been on an all natural diet (home-cooked) for almost 2 years now and I've seen a big difference in my older guy, especially since he is plagued with numerous health problems.

I love those dogs Wendy! I've always wanted one but with the weather being so hot and dry in Kansas, it wouldn't be too comfortable for a large hairy dog  .
Home cooked meals for your dogs? Now that's love :D

Here's my Sassy, the sweetest most affectionate cat in the world. Very annoying sometimes, but I love her dearly.

Thanks Diane. You know, as long as you have central AC, the Berners will be fine in Kansas, too. :D Contrary to common belief, Berners are the most laid back, laziest dogs you can find, and make excellent apartment dwellers even. They are most happy laying on your feet all day long, leaning up against you and "playing shadow". ;)

Both of mine are kept indoors all year long, unless they WANT to be outside, of course. The shedding isn't all that bad, once a year a heavy duty load of hair, especially after a bath in the early summer.

....just trying to encourage you a bit here.... {D

Wendy, I'm curious to know what your recipe is for your dog chow? If you don't mind sharing:)

I'd be happy to share. :)

1 humongous chicken (the whole entire thing, free-range, but cleaned and plucked)
1 cup brown rice
1 bag whole-wheat noodles

Place chicken in BIG pot and cook for 1-2 hours, depending on size. Remove chicken and add brown rice. When rice is almost done add noodles. After rice and noodles are thoroughly cooked, drain excess liquid. In the meantime the chicken has sufficiently cooled down so that you can rip/tear it up and add little pieces under the rice/noodles.

Store entire contents in refrigerator. When feeding the dog(s) re-heat to room temperature or a bit warmer, add grated apple, carrots, and/or other shredded vegetables (raw is best, and I prefer organic).

Depending on how your dog tolerates different foods, you can also add cooked egg, cottage cheese.

I also alternate the meats with RAW leg of lamb, RAW emu, RAW turkey (all free-range animals....well, I pay for free-range meats)

Both my boys get additional Vitamins (C, E, Fish Oil) Alfalfa, SeaMeal, and my older guy gets a Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM supplement as well for his joints and arthritis.

I actually have a cook book for dogs, so I can play around with different ideas. Mine DO NOT tolerate all the foods I've ever made, but over time I've come to know which foods to avoid.

Sounds yummy enough for us humans to eat!:) I'll have to try that for my boy as an alternative to commercial pet food. As well, I would like to find a recipe suitable for cats. I think their nutritional requirements are different from that of a dogs. I do feed them both healthy scraps quite often but I've never tried to go without the commercial stuff for fear of not giving them all the nutrients they need. The one thing I don't do, is feed my dog, commercial doggie treats...he is addicted to mini carrots...that is what he expects as a treat :}
thanks for the recipe:)
