I've tried to keep Hellgrammite larvae but I never did see them eat anything. Anybody know of a good food for them? Well that thing in this thread looks pretty weird. It could be an adult cave arthropod of some kind. Was it found close to the spring source? Do all the "legs" look like true legs?

I agree with Galapoheros.

I guess it is some kind of cave isopod or amphipod...but if you could show it to someone who studies those that'd be great. Imagine a captive population of cave pillbugs. I'd totally want some.

yea, it was right in front of the hole which is only about 2 inches across.
It's only flowing when it has rained recently I think, I don't think I have ever really noticed it flowing before.

yes, I would say they look like true legs... as compared to what? feelers/fins?

Unfortunately the injuries sustained must have been too much for it.

I will try to look at it under a microscope at my parent's house this week.
what is the best way to keep it preserved? alcohol?

That's pretty cool. I would like having a spring on my property. I'd keep it natural but I would also use the water for other things. A water source is where it's at. I don't like depending on the gov for stuff like that. Are you going to try to find another one of those isopods? I'm going to a spring soon to look for stuff to put in my empty 10 gal, the prob will be keeping stuff alive on the 3 hour trip.

yea, I think I will keep an eye out for any more critters.
that would be pretty cool to have a tank full of isopods.
I think the temp would need to be pretty low, I know it's cold now, but springs are usually pretty cold year round.

surely there is a spring close than 3 hours away from you?
