There are specific spiders that I want in my collection, and if one dies, then I will replace it with another one of the same kind, or I will reexamine if I want to continue with that species or move on to one of the others that I want in my collection.

Swifty gives a freebie with every order -- no need to spend a hundred bucks.

I've received the following freebies:

G. alticeps
B. "pallidum"
B. vagans
P. regalis
A. aurantiaca

I got the G. alticeps as fairly large juvenile. To be honest, it didn't seem very special compared to my more colorful Ts. And then he molted out a mature male. He was really nice, like a G. pulchra with long red hairs on his legs. It was quite a surprise; there aren't any pictures of male G. alticeps on the web. I sent him to Phillip Redwine on a breeding loan but the female T decided he was dinner.

I gave the B. pallidum to an 8-year-old kid that I know. I asked his parents ahead of time and they agreed but his arachnophobic grandmother freaked out and he had to give it back after a few months. He still comes to visit "his" spider. I show him new additions to my collection and we talk about inverts. I always try to spread the gospel.

So, overall, I like the freebies. If I had a really large collection, I might feel differently.

Clarki ?!?

Freebie Clarki ..lucky bastard! Who are you getting that order from? and how big is the clarki? I need about ten of them. But not 1/4" babies. Beleive me i have WAY too many of those. I still have p cambridgei>1" and p murinus >just hatched out a little less than a week ago >1/4" when they are ready. Anyone looken to trade anything???

. I'm a hardcore Aphonopelma fanatic.. Despite critisim from old world a$$holes J.K...don't get me wrong now! i LOVE all the old world "Baboon Tarantulas". My secound favorite , i'm not to weak to handle some NW hairs now and then...or in my case nearly every day!
but poec.'s are not my fav's....go ahead make your remarks...

I have received as many as 12 freebies in one order..not just all the small same slings either!
I'm waiting to send off some orders, then i will be able to re-up with Kelly. I have nearly EVERYTHING on his list...
Damn he needs some new stuff!! Anyway he says he has a special freebie for me , that he knows i will love. BUT HE WON"T TELL ME!!...oh well i geuss the suprise element is fun..

...black coffee is good, i couldn't be typing this without my trusty coffee maker near by!

Talk to ya' all soon!

I have gotten these species as freebies: Thrixopelma pruriens, Euathlus pulcherimaklaasi, Chilobrachys fimbriatus, and Psalmopoeus reduncans. From various dealers.

as an OW aboreal keeper (though I bought an A. minatrix) I was disappointed with the OBTs I got as freebies and those after a discussion that offered me several NW species and the OBT as the only OW. I feel that tailoring to a persons order is the way to go. I would much rather of been given another pokey since that was the base of my order. BUT with freebies I guess it's really dealers choice or do without.

I think getting freebies are cool, especially like with Swifty where you can choose from a group which spider you want as a freebie. As for me,the coolest freebie I ever got was a Ceratogyrus brachycephalus from Kelly.

My first T was a G rosea "pet rock", at that time I was under the impression that the entire genus of Grammostola never moved and ate only once a year. If it weren't for freebies I wouldnt yet have my (2) G. aureostriata's. GREAT species! Ive also recieved a 1/4" G. rosea which I had to untangle from the cotton (man it was stuck)! This being the first "T" I had to handle. Go ahead and laugh but I chalk it up to experience.
And lastly, with my last order from Scotts Tarantulas, he threw in a FREE sub-adult P. murnis (3"). This being my first Old World "T"!
So you can say I LOVE freebies. Its given me variety, experience, and the chance to explore the hobby inadvertantly.

Does anyone know if the Spider Shoppe/Mike Jacobi offers freebies with orders?
I guess I'll answer that myself :)

I often give freebies with orders. I just don't advertise it for a couple of reasons. Number one, it's kind of Kelly Swift's "thing". He's the one most associated with that bonus. It's a great idea and something his customers appreciate, but I just feel that for another dealer to adopt the "always a freebie" stance is too "copycat". Plus, I like it to be a surprise!. Now I know Kelly surprises you with his choice, but I want to really surprise people by giving them something they didn't expect at all. So the short answer is that I don't promise it or copy another dealer's method, but I often will surprise my customers with a little bonus when they unpack the box. Or when speaking to a customer on the phone I will discover what he or she is "into" and decide to give them something extra that fits their particular interests. You have to remember that just giving away something you have way too much of takes absolutely nothing. I can't give away enough of some spiderlings (e.g., Lasiodora parahybana!) and I produce thousands of roaches each week. One of 2500 spiderlings in a sac is hardly special, but for someone to order a few different Brachypelma species and then get an extra one of a different species is. I have been very tempted to "officially" offer "freebies" - this thread makes it very evident that y'all really like that - but I won't step on Kelly's toes by doing so. I'll just surprise you nicely now and again.

Thanks for reading, Michael

PS - It never hurts to ask! :D

why knock it?

Why are you guys knockin' freebie's? OK so you didn't order it, what are you gonna do with it, ya can't use it. So what, I think it is still a nice gesture. It's like not knowing what you are getting for Christmas and you are surprized.
If you are a true "T" lover, you'll keep it as a pet or sell it to someone who needs it.
Still and all, it's a cool gesture. Even some private breeders send freebie's. Did anyone ever recieve a freebie from a private breeder?

What to do with freebies?

Why not get more people into the hobby? I know that if I didn't want or need the freebie I recieved, I would find someone to give it to.
