Seeing as how you're in ground zero of the L. Hesperus range you could start making a survey of your surrounding area. You know, do a population census and take note of their preferred habitat as proximity to water sources, adaptation to human encroachment and so on. In undisturbed locales around there, there should be a few hundred per acre but they adapt as humans encroach, tending to crowd into specific areas. In the ground water meters, behind washing machines and behind public toilets etc are their preferred human encroachment adaptation environments. You can also try monitoring the ongoing encroachment of L. Geometricus into the habitats.
The easiest way to go Widow watching is to become familiar with their extremely strong webbing which usually sets them apart from all other spiders.
