I thought male black widows were a plain brown. I never have seen one so pretty.

Thats because she is not a male.
It doesnt look like a male ...small pics, but you can see it has a round abdomen.
If it truely came from california, it is most likely Hesperus. Hesperus males, even after feeding have very slender abdomens.
Here are some Hesperus males...

Mactan males look more like sub-adult females. If we had a better image that showed the palps we could make the call, but with the clues we have, along with the pics ...thats a sub-adult female hesperus.
