I was into fish way before I got my first T. I currently have ten tanks running, mostly filled with different species of piranhas and cichlids. My basement looks like sea world! :D
If you can have a 10 gal. at work and you want an aggressive, nice looking fish that can live in it for life, try an exodon,(Exodon paradoxus) also known as the bucktooth tetra. Their max size is about 6". They are scale eaters that will kill goldfish and also consume smaller tetras and guppies. Flakes, frozen bloodworms, krill and pellets are accepted too, they aren't fussy eaters.
They are purely psychotic in schools! Like mini piranhas when they feed. They never stop moving! I have always been told to keep them in odd numbers in groups under ten fish. If you have even numbers, they will pair up and eliminate one another until one fish remains. For a 10 gal. I would suggest just one. Three might be pushing it.
I currently have three 3" exodons that have been living with three 7" Pygocentrus natterreri(red belly piranhas) in a 60 g. for about 5 months now. So far the piranhas don't pay much attention to them, and the exodons clean up the little scraps the piranhas leave behind very well. The P's chase them once and awhile, but the exodons are lightning quick. I was told this setup has worked before with other piranha keepers, but I am sure the exos will be dinner eventually.
Sorry about the rant, got a little carried away!:D Good luck and let us know what you decide !
