hi. Ive been given the ok to bring in some fish for a desk at work, but im afraid im going to be limited to a smaller tank, such as 5.5 gallons or perhaps two 2.5 gallon aquariums. I was thinking of keeping some tetras. What do you think?

Won't let you keep a 2.5 gallon with a T in it?

If it must have water in it, how about a crayfish?

I was thinking something along the line of an invertebrate as well, but its alot easier to swipe a t than it is to swipe some fish. Ill look into the crayfish, thx dave.

There are some "electric blue" ones that are quite stunning. I know that Botar was breeding them for a bit. I, personally, love the standard Florida red ones. You can probably get some quite easily considering where you live. They have personality and are easy to take care of. I suppose you could also keep some shrimp or something or a small crab. I had an asian crab of some sort once but it didn't live long.

Not exactly 2.5 gallon material, though. 25, maybe ... for one.

Pirahnas are smaller then you think....some of them. Ive seen small pirahnas measuring just under 3 inches. Id say thats a good 10 gallon fish.

Piranhas

A piranha under 3" is most assuredly not full grown. At an adult size of 6", Serrasalmus hollandi is considered one of the smaller species of true piranhas. The most common piranha in the hobby is Serrasalmus nattereri, the red belly piranha. These can attain sizes of 8"+, and woud definitely not be suitable for a 2.5 gallon tank. Most books on the subject recommend a tank of at least 20 gallons.

Vayu, you might be better off with a betta or some guppies.

Id say a few small tetra like Paracheirodon innesi or P. axelrodi.
Piranhas or oscar is way to big for 2.5 gallon tank.

yeah... i thought he said 10 gal  , which would be good for a small oscar... you'd just have to end up moving him eventually

ok my boss went to the Marine Aquarium Conference North America ( MACNA ) and a german guy has proved the skeptics wrong and taught him to set up a nano reef tank. so you can have a 2.5 gallon saltwater tank and its easy to setup. the only problem or drawback is you can't have fish! you can have invertabrates or maybe a small goby, but you can have some feather dusters or maybe some leather coral. you can get tons of different things and you will be the envy of everyone else. so if you want to know how to set it up let me know and ill let a in on it.

cor, fortunately ive convinced em to let me bring in a 10 gallon. now what are your suggestions? I was thinking a small school of cardinal tetra +something compatible in a warm water environment. maybe some ghost shrimp also.

hmm you could add some fancy guppies, mollies or sword. *(but a hint of advice they all like a lil salt in the water. If no salt they tend to get sick often) You could also try some of the smaller barbs but I would suggest that b/c I just don't like them ;P

How about some aquatic insects? You can do a really nice comunity ten-gallon tank with insects. I've got a ten gallon tank in my office with two species of diving beetles, 6 or 7 waterscorpions, and glass shrimp (not insects, I know). The beetles are very active, and every bit as entertaining as fish. The waterscorpions rarely move, but they look cool doing nothing :D

The shrimp add an element of mystery, plus they clean up the leftover food of the above!

You could also add some small fish if you must. Feh.

But be warned, an aquatic insect tank will get you some sideways glances from your coworkers. Ask Wade, he knows. :D

You've got to collect them yourself, a sturdy fine meshed net is all you need. In Florida, you should have all those animals I mentioned and more. I'm working on an article on collecting and keeping aquatic inverts for the ATS Forum right now.

Dave- My coworkers are used to it, however. They're more concerned with the rotten logs I stuffed in the freezer! :D

Fish are my first love. I have a 90 gallon DENSLEY planted tank. Let me say that an oscar or a pirhana is a horrible idea. I would keep neither in anything less than a 55.

With 2.5 you really have very few choices. A betta of course. A small school of say four neon tetras. Maybe a cray fish. Eclipse makes an excellent little three gallon tank that is a complete set up, light, biowheel filtration and tank... not a bad price if I recall either.
