Hi everyone! I have very little experience with snakes. I was wondering specifically about helping the snake ajust. I read that you should leave it alone for the first 5-7 days, but if so, how will you feed it? I know that feeding snakes happens infrequently compared to other animals, but I wanted to know if it's safe to not feed it for seven days. Also, what kinds of stuff should I avoid doing, and for how long? Thanks a lot!

It's a garter snake.

I have tons of questions, but I am very curious about what brands of snake prey are the best. I've heard of terrarium accesory supply brands, such as Zoo Med, Zilla, and Exo Terra, but where can I get good prey? I don't want it to be super expensive, but s reasonable price for the quality of the prey. Thank you all!

Thanks for merging the threads secret Mod. I appreciate it.

Give it a hide and a water dish and leave it alone for a week.

Please provide more information about the type of snake you got.

Adults do not need to eat very often, I have a sub adult male who regularly refuses food for up to 3 weeks at a time, and a female that eats every other week, and another that eats weekly.

Those get kinda long.

Assuming you already have your choice of enclosure and substrate decided, I reccomend you provide a basking area using a UV bulb as this snake is active during the day and needs vitamins D3.

You could use heat mats for belly or back heat as well, but I believe the UV is necessary for this type of snake.

A water dish long enough for the snake to fully submerge itself is nice, as they are often found around water in the wild.

Maybe a couple hardscape points ro climb?

I only feed my snakes every 10-14 days, so 2-3 times a month. Don't handle them after feeding as this can cause them to regurgitate.

Try not to condition a feeding/bite response and get the snake used to handling in short sessions at first.

What kind of garter snake? The questions you’re asking are too vague to give advice. What size or age is the snake? What was it eating before you got it? Garter snakes generally start off tiny and different species and locales have a variety adult sizes and diets and parameters for care. I’d recommend asking the person you got it from for most of that. Assuming you’re in the US, many species may go off food for winter so brumating is something to think about. Again, this depends on the size, age, and sex of the snake as well as how it was cared for before you got it

dont be scared if sometimes they go without food for long time....depends if its male or female etc...
after week weight the snake and buy apropriate food ( 10% of body weight) and try to feed it...is it juvenile adult?
female male? wc or cb? rough enclosure measurements?
all this can help us respond to you easier

You need to ask whoever you got it from what it was eating. Trying to change feeders can be difficult at best, especially if they were feeding it something more unusual (fish/lizards/etc.). Once you figure that out, you can figure out where to source your feeders, but I would suggest finding a good local pet shop that sells feeder animals so you can get them easily. If it was eating frozen/thawed, you can also buy larger quantities from the store or online and keep the feeders in the freezer until you need them.

not sure if you researched enough....i would like to point out that garter snakes are opisthogylphus.
which means they have mild venom ( neurotoxin if i remember correctly) but they deliver it with back fangs...bites hardly happen and they need to chew onto you but if you are allergic there could be some complications....treat with care

I had many garter snakes. They all eat the same but the biggest difference in species is how they go thru winter. Hibarnation, brumation temps will be different depeninding on species. I had 2 fridges with different temps. 5c and 10c. And mexican species I just had in a cold room during the winter.

Like someone said ... use UV and add vitamins depending on the foods you give. An reptile docter advised me to buy the chepest catfood with fish. Remove the jelly and feed it. It has everyting it needs.
Mine didn't like it much. I always siwtched foods with every meal. One off my big Thamnophis eques scotti female loved mice :). When I put some fish ond a plate and a mice somewhere in it she always picked that out first.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the same person who had escaped centipedes. Why would we get a snake we nothing about?

That's not what my scoutmaster taught us.

Must have missed a few steps.

Lucky!! Mom made me release nearly everything I caught.
Your scout master apparently didn't teach you well! Some of them bastards are tough! Lol!!

mom ripping me a new one was worse each time i came home with a new pet and needing a new tank for em:rofl:
This all reminds me of a great "when I was a kid story"... Camping with a bunch of families that camped together a few times each summer, the dads all gone fishing, moms "watching" the kids. I (one of the kids) and a few others were hiking by the stream when I found and caught a garter snake, which I brought back to camp. It started raining on the way, so wanting to protect the snake from the rain stuck it under my jacket. Just about the time we walked back into camp, the snake made it's way up under my jacket to my neck, which is where it bit me just as my mom walked up to see what we were up to. When my mom came to, she threw me in the car and drove me 90 miles to the emergency room, even though I was assuring her I was fine - and so did the ER docs. My dad wasn't real pleased with her decision to take me to the ER, but he was less pleased with me for sticking a snake under my shirt. He would have told me I was going to die and let me sweat it out for a while. It was a lesson learned for a lot of us that day... Ah, memories!

i am sorry....UV only as means of heatspot correct? i mean snakes are not lizards...snakes suposedly get all the vitamins from their prey ( thus variability in prey...)
i mean i had over 20 cobras...never ever did i read or heard to give vitamins to snake?

NONE at all for you. You provided no info of any value.

You basically told us “I bought a vehicle, I need tips”

Good luck!
