A friend of mine says they have a zillion "Junebugs" and will catch a bunch for me to feed my G. rosea...was wondering if they would be okay to feed her, I'm not sure exactly what species they are..they live out in the middle of nowhere and don't use pesticides so that shouldn't be a problem. Also I'm told not to give her Ladybugs..why is that:confused:

lady bugs contain toxins that can be harmful to animals that consume them.

in regard to your junebug question, I personally wouldn't risk feeding them a junebug just because of the "contamination" issue. lord knows where those things have been and I don't want to risk it.

just my 2cents...

That was interesting about the ladybugs..you kinda think of them as a "good bug" all harmless and benificial and stuff..thanks:cool: Think I'm more excited about my G. rosea than when I first got her.

I know what you mean about ladybugs seeming all harmless but the reason they are beneficial is that they kill other bugs that damage crops. It depends on your point of view.

They're good for plants, but not predators. {D Also never feed fireflies to anything, that'll even kill large insectivore lizards like bearded dragons.

I was thinkin' about fireflies too as a matter of fact..thought "That glowjuice can't be good for the preds that eat it" What I'd like is a huge, fat, big, caterpillar to give her..that would be something to see her eat:}

Oh, you can get captive bred horn worms. But if you must go that route, cut the dang horn off. haha

Was that a joke or could the hornworm's horn really be dangerous to my T:confused:

Well I see it like this. Nature gave horn worms those horns for a reason. and when I was a kid I remember picking them off my tomato plants and those little buggers flailling that horn in the air trying to impale me. So it is a type of defense, so why chance it?

Thats just the way I look at it though.

I grew up in the Arizona desert so didn't see too many worms and bugs...remember a lot of grasshoppers, beetles and scorps, some spiders a few centipedes and a few other flying pests but that's about it insect and arachnid wise..oh yeah and a lot of really big ants:cool:

They (ladybugs) are good for plants because they prey on the aphids that suck the sap out of the plants.

Is there a list somewhere that tells of "bugs" and other creatures I shouldn't feed my T?

Well, they eat other bugs which makes them predators.
Ladybugs are not predators of other ladybugs (unless I missed something). Therefore you either missed the point entirely or you're just purposely being sassy. :}

Junebugs

I've fed my avic junebugs. You pretty much have to trust that they haven't come in contact with any pesticides, or know the surrounding area is pesticide/herbicide free. The only thing is they borrow at night but come out during the day. I don't know if they would harm a molting tarantula though, but better to be safe than sorry.

Good to know about the Junebugs...what did you feed them? I've never encountered "Junebugs" before so don't know exactly what they are or if there are several different kinds...can I get a couple scientific names please:confused:

Doesn't the fact that ladybugs eat other bugs such as aphids, mites and each other (when juveniles) classify them as predators :? ? If not then I must have missed your point. I thought that was what you were saying. Sorry to the OP for getting off topic.

What I was replying to:
"That was interesting about the ladybugs..you kinda think of them as a "good bug" all harmless and benificial and stuff."

What I said:
"They're good for plants, but not predators."

Ladybugs are not harmless to predators, because their chemical defenses make it a really bad idea to eat them (which is what predators tend to do to other animals). They are therefore "not good" for predators, because eating ladybugs is bad for you.

A ladybug eating aphids thus has nothing to do with what I was talking about. If the aphids were eating the ladybugs, it'd be relevant, but I don't think that happens much. ;P
