Feeding a 0.5mm sling and tips

Hiya, new(ish) sling owner here!

I have 1 sling, a C. elegans of about 0.5mm, who I currently have eating every 4-6 days. I got it late January to early February. I was wondering if anyone knew of something other than fruit flies to feed such a small sling? I probably won't be allowed termites(which I've seen recommended once or twice), and I don't have the space to make/grow a colony unless it's small. It's such a waste to spend £5 on a tub of fruitflies when I only manage to feet my sling once or twice before they all die.

Any advice on keeping slings this small would be appreciated to be honest, I didn't realise just how small it would be when I bought it (joys of buying online). I think after having 3 juvies/adults I got a bit overconfident 😅

Cheers 😊

I had a C. elegans sling of the same size when I bought it. TSS by any chance. I used to let mine scavenge feed when it was this big. Mine used to take either a small pre killed cricket or a cricket drumstick (leg). I just used to place it outside the burrow and by morning it was gone. TSS sell bean weevils which are small and suitable for small slings although Ive never used them personally but could be worth checking out?

I think that is 0.5 inches, in the U.K they are often sold at that size :)
Yes, I think so, too, but as they're using mm and cm as we do in Germany, I was just wondering whether OP used the wrong metrics. ;) I wasn't completely serious though. :p

My C. elegans was about the same size when I got her:

I think you are right. A 0.5mm sling would be a nightmare to feed lol! :D

I have mealworm and roach colonies so I usually feed pre-killed pinhead roaches or tiny mealworms (under 1cm in length).

Sorry... 0,5mm??? o_O I know they're tiny... but that tiny? Or did you mean 0,5 inch?
0.5cm or 5mm, most sellers here measure in cm.

Yup, 0,5 cm seems more plausible. ;) I just tried to imagine caring for an 0,5 mm sling... :embarrassed: :p

Oops, I meant to put cm instead of mm, my bad. To clarify I did mean half a centimetre. Trying to look after one this size is hard enough, let alone one so small 😅

Looks like I'll have to see if I have any cricket small enough, otherwise I'll try the dicing idea 🤔

Thanks guys!

I’m thinking the 0.5mm...might be a typo...that is so tiny it could get lost between the particles of the substrate.

So, I'll just say “Keep it moist and try using springtails.”....also pre-killed is awesome and has worked for me. Cold Blood swears by using cut up mealworm sections...and I've simply learned to trust his advice...

Cut up mealworms, legs off of crickets also work. I raised several C. elegans from 1/8" to a nice size using cricket legs almost exclusively. I mean, everyone loves drumsticks right?
