I'm sure there's already been a lot of discussion of this but recently we've had our share of this garbage, when our local version of this show called "Pelkokerroin" decided it would be cool if the competitors had to eat a living tarantula. I must say I enjoyed it, when the spider bit the moron in the mouth, before dying. Also, I got the impression no one there had no idea of urticating hairs.

If I remember correctly this has been even worse in other countries. Can you enlighten me?

Can't see any way they could do that "safely". If they did it with a new world, there is the Urticating hairs, if they do it with old world, there is the more potent venom, surely no-one would sign up knowing the urticating hair risk??

In my opinion, the risk isn't the issue. The main issue is that they are killing animals purely for entertaiment. In Cannibal Holocaust (movie) they killed lizards and turtles if I remember correctly, and no one could get away with it these days.

Maybe someday people undestand that there's more to these creatures too. Even if they are "just spiders."

I've seen tarantulas in a few of these cheezy reality fear shows lately. Sci-Fi had a brief show called Million Dollar Mansion or some such garbage. They had all these rooms kitted out to be all scary, including being strewn with some species of Aphonopelma. All I saw were mature males which means they WC'd them from somewhere, probably as they were traveling en masse for mating season. Somewhere a whole local population lost an entire generation because these dummy's wanted to use the T's for props. I'm sure some of them were squashed or killed in falls. Many had been placed on rafters in the attic... Disgusting.

The real Fear Factor series regularly had segments that involved a person sitting in a box/bathtub that was then filled with scorpions/spiders/tarantulas/etc.

They also used to have what looked like an acrylic box that the person's head would go into that they'd have tarantulas in it.

It's such a waste to kill or endanger those animals purely for entertainment. Just imagine what happens to the 200-300 tarantulas that are put in the tube the person has to crawl through or the hundreds of scorps that are dumped into that box when the show is done filming. I'm sure they aren't handled with care and sent off to experienced handlers to be taken care of.

what is the difference between a person having a WC tara in their collection that they never breed and a WC getting toasted in a show? logically justify your answer and try to keep the emotional drivel to a minimum, por favor ;)

A WC female tarantula in the possession of a hobbyist could possibly lay an eggsac (from mating prior to her collection). A cooked female can't.

It's a stretch though.

I agree with the point you made. ;)

Begins at 20 mins or so, so skip there. I'm sure you fine people don't want to watch the whole episode. ;)
The part that gets me is when the host goes on about failing the contestants if they mistreat the spiders, and states that "safety comes first, for you and for them".

From what I saw, my definitions of "mistreatment" and "safety" differ significantly from those of the show's producers, who are guilty of the very things the contestants are being warned against.

They don't consider them animals. Unfortunately, they think they are simply stupid insects.

I don't get it? Where is the part they eat the T? I don't see anyone get bit either. Besides all that, poor T's!

Some of the T's looked really dehydrated. But at least they didn't have to eat them. There's that one american fear factor episode where they had to eat some Damon Diadema and they were crunched and then dropped and then picked up again 5 minutes later. Must have died an agonizing death.

This isn't the episode I was talking about in the original post. I just came across it.
