Exposure to lysol

My mom cleaned around my a. avicularia’s tank with lysol today, do you think hes gonna be okay??

I am pretty scared honestly. My mom went into my hobby room and started to clean (shes very particular and neurotic about cleaning), and i went to go check it out. So i did, and i immediately noticed the smell of lysol. I was mortified and i asked her about it. She said that she sprayed the lysol on a paper towel and wiped down the table ( right in front and all around my little dude).

But anyways, i moved his tank to the other side of the room right away and checked on him to make sure nothing immediately happened. After that I moved him to my bathroom which has no chemicals or anything going on.

He seems okay, but im still terrified. I used a little paintbrush to touch him a bit and get him to move around just to see if he was still moving like normal, and he was so i hope its all okay. He was by the lysol for a maximum of 15 minutes, and it wasnt directly sprayed on his tank or in the air, but im still really worried for him. I made absolutely sure that she knows never to spray anything like that near him again.

Any advice or suggestions are much appreciated <3

make it very clear in no uncertain terms to never ever use chemicals around your pets again. either that or get a place of your ownor go out and buy a new deadbolt to add onto that door

i made it extremely clear, but i will still definitely be getting a deadbolt or something of the sort. Thank you for the idea

Lysol and similar contain a galaxy of toxic chemicals. Very little regulation regarding their contents. Best to consider all household cleaning agents as one small grade below pesticides.

Agreed just try not to use it around them. The only cleaning agent I’ll use is warm water or rubbing alcohol to clean surfaces and never had any issues with this

Make sure he has water available, and keep an eye on him for any signs of DKS, but otherwise, you've done all the right things--you've moved him to a different area as soon as you found out, and you're monitoring him.

I don't have any advice but wanted to chime in to say that although no exposure to Lysol or other household cleaning products is safe, you say that your mom sprayed a cloth and then wiped around the enclosure, which means it's less likely that actual droplets made their way into the enclosure, which is good. The fumes are another thing to worry about, but fingers crossed that moving him was enough to prevent any harm.

hey! thank you so much, this makes me feel a lot better i forgot to mention his enclosure smelled completely normal when i opened the lid to check on him last night, just like damp soil lol. so i dont think any made it in, but my god i was terrified about fumes.
i cleaned the table with a whole load of water this morning and dried it, aired out the whole room all night. theres no traces of any chems left and hes back in his spot. im sitting with him right now and he seems fine, i dumped out and replaced his water last night right after too. i dont want to bother him but i might give him a little paintbrush tap again to check his movement. he seems calm though, and he looks healthy

Update 2 : Its the next day, i aired out the whole room overnight and washed the table a bunch with water. Theres no traces of anything left in the air or on the surface (i sniffed the table way more times than a normal person would) and i still have a window cracked just in case. He looks perfect, and he seems calm. This morning he was crawling around the walls and cleaning himself, and now hes in the spot he usually likes. Very hopeful

WARNING: I just checked. Lysol contains Benzalkonium Chloride - BKC. Just being in a room with that stuff in concentration can trash your sinuses and cause upper respiratory distress. Bonus, it's also carcinogenic. Not surprised it's in Lysol, it's the industrial grade mold and fungus killer go to.
(Added to the packaging material of the tasty junk food at your 7-11 BKC will keep that garbage well preserved for years or even decades.)

He even decided to take a little stroll around the top rim, hung out up there while i worked in the tank. Love this little guy Hes been pretty active, climbing around and doing his thing. He ate a cricket last night, so im very hopeful all is good

Lol you got that last part right on. Thankfully i told her and after a long, lightly heated discussion she promised me she wouldnt ever use chemicals in there again, on anything. Plus i started locking it secretly at night teehee.
Hes doing good today, windows still open and i popped his enclosure open a few times to clean it up in there, hes got enough air for a few lifetimes lol. He even decided to take a little stroll around the top rim, hung out up there while i worked in the tank. Love this little guy Hes been pretty active, climbing around and doing his thing. your profile says new york. Keep updated on weather with those opened windows. Im in quebec and we are starting to get below freezing. A bad cold wind can be bad if constant with a tarantula thats indoor acclimated. Its no different then if it were out in the wild, but indoor breezes can do harm.

some tarantulas get stimulated by “winds” because its like blowing on them and they sense it. If you notice your tarantula getting agitated, its spending energy going around everywhere.

that would be the only thing id make sure to watch. Plus more wind could scatter around residue. So just be mindful of it.

Update 3: Today has been a good day for my little buddy, last night he ate a cricket and hes been looking great today. Worked in his home a bit, made him a lovely little hiding and climbing spot with some cork bark i picked up. While i was fixing his tank up, he climbed to the rim and took a stroll around the top Ushered him back in without a problem, and he went right to his new log. (I have to brag about him because hes so chill and compliant lol) Hes been nice and active today, walking all over the place, and going on his little adventure. I have high hopes now that hes totally okay!
My mom has even started to fall in love with him too, and after i told her how bad that couldve been, she apologized a bunch and promised me to never use chemicals in here for the little guy’s sake.
This could have been something horrible but im just glad its all okay. I will still continue to give updates on him

Thank you so much Youre absolutely right, and i have been keeping an eye on it. I shut the windows at night and whenever i leave the house. It has been getting colder steadily here, but there wasnt much wind today. i never let it get too cold in here, and i even have a little thermometer on his cage tho its kinda unnecessary. Just like to be sure As well as the way my apartment building is set up, this room tends to not get more than a slight breeze on even the most windy days thankfully. Thank you so much for the advice <3 As soon as i feel a breeze in here i will think back to this comment and shut that window asap LOL

Thank you so much Youre absolutely right, and i have been keeping an eye on it. I shut the windows at night and whenever i leave the house. It has been getting colder steadily here, but there wasnt much wind today. i never let it get too cold in here, and i even have a little thermometer on his cage tho its kinda unnecessary. Just like to be sure As well as the way my apartment building is set up, this room tends to not get more than a slight breeze on even the most windy days thankfully. i use a thermometer/hygro in different parts of my living area where i keep my tarantulas. Its just for a reference. Helps me to know if the room is too dry or too cold. But, like i said, its a reference. I dont look at the specific numbere. I use my local weather more. I have environnement canada weather app.

Update 4! Little man is doing great This morning he had a tiny isopod stuck to his leg hair which tells me he’d been walking around on the dirt lol. Im hanging out with him now and hes walking around it and seems to be doing perfect. He even spun some nice webbing on his new cork bark Im so grateful that hes alright, that was truly a terrifying experience and i will make sure that anything like that will never happen again, ever. I strive to give my little buddy the best life possible
