Hi... I am just theorizing again, as so many times. I just wanna have said this before saying the rest!

Have you ever fed a full grown T while it was sitting on your hand?

To be asking this question responsively I wanna add: Do not try this at home!... but IF you have, please tell me about it, I'm curious as to how that feels and if the T took the prey item eventho it was distractet cuz it being carried arround.

But I am also wondering whether (if one where to try) one would automatically end up being bitten since the T needs the ground to push its teeth against when thrusting them through its prey?

Don't use this message as an inspiration for silly tests on this subject! If unlucky it can end a bad for everybody involved!

i wouldnt say thats a good idea and that i would never try it. the t might not even go for it because it is stressed out from being held so i would think it would just let it go by.i tired this when i out my semmanni on my kitchin table and he didnt take it so i would think the t wouldnt take it imo

Yeah, sounds like a bad idea.

Plus, I would hate the feel of cricket guts on my hand.

IME it wont bother the food at all .. either it just stands still and do nothing even if the cricket is standing on it or it will just walk / run away .. so no point trying.. LOL

I feed my A. avics with tweezers almost all the time... they haven't show any signs of aggression towards me in the slightest. My baby even jumped onto the tweezers while I was still holding onto the cricket. He was munching the cricket while I was holding both of them with the tweezers. It was definitely a sight to see how agile these little beauties really are.

I might try this when I get home, it shouldn't be any problem, especially with a little pinktoe.

The thing that raises a red flag with me would be the Ts response after they grab their food. Sometimes they will back up really quickly and that could cause a fall or stress out the T is one way or another. I am thinking it's not the greatest idea in the world.

sounds like a cheesy idea to me and a great chance for injury for you or your T but im sure there are people out there that i have tried it.

Well, just to clarify once again - I was just curious if somebody had done this, and in that case what the feel of the spider on the hand would have been. I can agree it's an odd thought but again: nothing I would EVER do, as already mentioned due to the high risk of injury to both spider and handler.

About myself: I am that way - that I can come up with very odd things I might ponder for a little while but which I'd never do because it's not reasonable or smart or because it's maybe even bad, but I theorize anyway because that at least doesn't hurt! So please don't try this anybody just because I've been wondering about it! I don't nessessarily need an answer!

Why I posted this in the first place was because I've handled a smithi ONE time (and it is likely to be the last time I've ever had a T on my hand!) and the experience was magnificent! It was something so odd to feel those eight legs coordinate their way across my palm, so I just got curious about how it would feel to have an actual feeding situation where the T grabs the insect and starts eating.

DON'T try it on my behalf please! I can't stress this enough and said that from the beginning!

All right. I will amit it, I have hand feed a tarantula. It was several years ago (12 years?) but I had a little rose hair called PrettyKill. She was hand raised by me from sling. If I killed the cricket and placed it between my fingers she would use her front legs to split my fingers and catch the cricket. I must stress that I knew this tarantula very well and after years of feeding her with thongs did I noticed that they were not needed. THIS IS A REALLY GOOD WAY TO GET TAGGED. I never held her in my hand while feeding her nor do I hold any of my tarantulas unless I have to. This was one of my tarantula out of dozens. The only other tarantula I would think of doing this with is my first Tarantula, Admiral, she was a curly hair but a mean feeder. If I tried hand feeding with her I would have got tagged. i never have and i dont think illbe in a rush to try it either. If somebody was to try it i dont think the T would catch the prey anyway because they rely on vibrations around them to sense things, and ive read that whilst your holding a T they cannot sense these vibrations around them, that maybe why some nervous species or even any species like to be handled. But if you want to try be my guest, let me know how it turns out!

It was very interesting to hear the things about vibrations and stuff, but I am now almost sorry I brought this up/posted this odd q in the first place. Guess that teaches me... hope I didn't enspire somone to do something stupid!

It all boils down to how Ts sense the world around them. They feel vibrations, have some (but probably very poor) eyesight, and can smell, but how does that translate into a T "visualizing" an accurate 3-D image of a cricket walking nearby? They are hunters with a very fast strike and they certainly know the location of the target. For example, I know that A. geniculata will rush its water dish when you pour in water and create "noise", but does the geniculata actually strike the dish with its fangs? Or does it stop because it senses that prey is not there? Without knowing how Ts perceive their environment, understanding their hunting reflexes is very difficult.

Obtain a 5 gallon bucket with lid,cut a 3 inch hole in the lid.Then place 7 ravenous adult rats in the bucket,make sure you use 7 or it won't work.Put the lid on the bucket remove your pants/shorts sit on the bucket dangling your testicles down through the hole.The secrets of the universe will be revealed to you in short order and wisdom will be gained.And you will no longer need to ponder such questions.
