That's a bummer. I am brand new to the whole pet spider thing and also to this website which i gotta say is a pretty awesome site. I'm just now playing around with it trying to learn how it all works. But anyways i have a wild caught Phidippus Audax named Jack that i have had for about 10 days now and i have become addicted to learning about him and jumping spiders in general. Anyways that's how i came across this thread and I thought of the bubble wrap and said what the heck i will see if i can add a reply. I had rocks on the bottom of my enclosure and after seeing Jack fall a couple times i felt terrible and i took them out but i haven't decided yet what type of substrate to get for him or if i even will. He seems to like running around on the bottom with just the leaves for now and it's better than landing on rocks i guess.

This is an old thread. OP concluded that her jumper's legs were sticking up in the air due to internal injuries & swelling that resulted from a fall. She called it "reverse pressurized" because the legs were sticking up instead of curling under like they do when a spider is dehydrated.

Sorry for posting on an old thread, but I seem to be having this problem with 1 of the back legs of my A. avicularia.

I got it several days ago and it was already in this condition, but I didn't notice until after I brought it home.

I wasn't sure what to do or even why it was happening, I figured everything from the pet store or collector closing the lid on its leg, to it maybe having parasites.

This thread has been eye opening. Has anything helped in any subsequent spiders to fix this kind of injury before self amputation or death occurs? Or is my T living on barrowed time before they even reach maturity? :/

Were any parasites ever found as a culprit later? or is it falling the final conclusion?

Its affected leg has dried out flattened toe pads which seem to lack tarsal claws, and it curves up in the same manner, as if pressurized or reflexed to do so.

The spider will self amputate a damaged limb and re-grow it after a couple of molts.

Yes, but what happens if it doesn't self amputate? Does the fresh limb growing inside the damaged one grow to be deformed? Or can it grow it correctly inside a damaged limb because of how soft new body parts are? That detail I've not seen answered anywhere, so because it's been keeping the damaged leg, I was extra worried.

Leg will be regenerated, however subsequent molt required for perfection.

Update:
After a single molt the leg is back to normal despite him never dropping it (functions and looks perfect).
I wanted to post this here to let others know that the pressurization issue can (at least sometimes) completely resolve itself faster than expected, even when it looks like it won't resolve at all and is severely reverse pressurized (depending on the cause I suppose?).
