Morning wood is not essential, mine just really enjoy it.

You can't usually get wood from a store ime. A bag of traeger wood pellets is about the only workable wood you'll be able to get in a store, as annoying as it may be to have to buy an entire bag. You can try ebay, I buy leaves there - just make sure it's listed as organic / no pesticides. Even then you're taking a risk since you have to just trust the seller.
You don't need to buy leaves from eBay. Just go to a forest and collect some leaves and rotting wood. Them bake said wood and leaves in the oven for an hour at 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Just make sure that you are watching the leaves and especially the wood when in the oven as it is a fire hazard. I have had no problems with bad pests. The only insects I get with the wood and leaves despite baking them are surprisingly springtails. I am not complaining about that!

I live in a majority coniferous territory, thanks though (hardwood > softwood). As you said, baking isn't foolproof either if you're getting springtail hitchhikers. Many people don't have access to a forest as well. Not to mention it's way easier to buy bulk leaves than it is to collect them.
