Paul - I would just like to point out that consulting with ONE vet, may lead you astray.
Vets prescribe "prescription foods" for certain things, that are no better than Wal mart brand foods.
Vets over-vaccinate animals.
A vet is a professional running a business, above all else. Yes, vets love animals... but they are also taught certain things in the veterinary field that are outdated.
I would encourage you to do a LOT of research, and talk to multiple vets
Get them goth fixed, unless you will be breeding the female. Un-spayed females very often get mammary cancer if not bred at least ever other year. I used to show AKC champion dogs and seen many fairly young unbred females develop breast cancers around 4yrs of age . It's the better thing to do, longer life spans and fewer temperament problems and dominance bullying from the intact dog
I showed dogs on the AKC southeast circuit for 4+, so I know a good deal about dog conditions
