I have only had contact with a tarantula once. It was a c. versicolor that I was rehousing and it walked up my arm, started projectile pooping then went back to its enclosure. How rude of her.

Please check this video and tell me if you ever did that -> https://fb.watch/a5RLrqMO5t/

I am afraid to do it but I really enjoyed watching this video. Show me how you touch your spiders if you are not afraid to do so. I don’t touch any of mine as I’m really scared.
i would like to see them try to do this with an OBT or H. mac

to answer your question - no, i don’t touch any of my pets with my hands - neither my arachnids for what should be obvious reasons nor my betta fish because they have a protective slime around their body that’s an integral part of their health (again, should be obvious)

The bi-weekly "handling" thread. I was beginning to worry the routine would be broken.

I touch and hold mine all the time. If I want the fuzzy leg experience just add a paint brush.

Here’s Wiener, my obt. 3FD26758-61D4-4007-B73E-90A3CE09AF7B.jpeg 7CA69A1B-B335-44C4-A702-69B7B66FE2E5.jpeg

Definitely in pre molt, i would just try him with 2 extra large locusts every day until he molts, then 15 minutes after feed him 2 live adult rats once a day
Don’t tell me that. 😆 3”+, getting beefy and probably a molt in the near future, but I want to upgrade her enclosure to the final one before that happens.

I would like to see some of your beta setups, if you have any posted somewhere. We used to keep betas, but never got into the rarer ones.

totally! I’m actually planning on redoing its enclosure soon and can send pix when complete - i just have the 1 and he’s a black mustard veil-tail - really cool and intelligent animal and there’s loads you can do with them too like name recognition, tricks, bioactive enclosures, etc

like owning a living work of art imo and their husbandry/water parameters are extremely simple and easy (even with the issues i have with obtaining clean water)

my insta account has just been for my arachnids and I’ve been struggling to take decent shots of my fish so I don’t have any at present

edit: I do have a close up of them

edit edit: here are some more - kind of get a feel of my tank but not really

Do I touch my spiders by hand? With my tarantulas, Amblypygi and scorpion no I do not. I keep them because I enjoy watching them, much like I enjoy watching a movie, or watching TV. Just picture someone petting and handling their TV. Then there's the possibility of harming these critters I've managed to keep alive and healthy for years. On top of that, I've seen and heard fangs piercing roaches harder than my skin and read plenty of accounts of people being "haired" by urticating setae. If someone really wants to handle something I'd recommend a fat chick as they're a lot of fun to handle.
I'll often move endemic true spiders around by hand though.

I know I'm late to the party but as to the not running away thing: just think of what a dubia roach does if its head isn't crushed sufficiently (it happens to us all) and it senses the tarantula. I doubt the roach is having a blast.

Yes but if the spider isn’t running away it must be enjoying it.
Not true at all. You don’t know much about behavior. Suggest you read, instead of watching StupidTube.

Where do you come up with some of your crazy ideas….

If not then how do they differentiate human hand and cricket
They can’t, that’s partly why people get bitten.

Oh how juicy a bait post..and on Christmas Eve 🙄

I noticed it's from face<edit> Just as bad if not worse than YT.

I would enjoy more the follow up video for when those huge fangs do their damage on him.

When that happens please post that video under 'Bite Reports'.

I can tell you there will be alot more damage to the person than just blood squirting with a tarantula that size.

Sarcasm is my favorite language, I forget some people don’t speak it.

I don’t handle my tarantulas. It’s not something you should aspire to do. There’s nothing about their behavior that indicates a pleasurable response to human interaction, and if you’re looking for a sign in THAT particular video, it’s the tucking of the tarantulas legs to its cephalothorax. A defensive and uncomfortable position from what we know of tarantula body language thus far. Your tarantula should be a “look but don’t touch” animal, try to abandon expectations outside of that.
My tarantula bite unlike your tarantulas on social media! Only Brachypelma hamorii doesn’t react to anything, the rest don’t allow any movements near them

i would like to see them try to do this with an OBT or H. mac

You try this with liasadora Parachybana and you will see how she is gonna eat you after

Orange, blue and very colourful spiders are not to be touched as they are very dangerous. You make laugh of very serious things.

I got two books but it doesn’t say all plus I want to see what people would say based on experience. Even if you do that, I won’t touch my spider because of fear. Simple!

handling is a great way to kill them. People come here all the time looking to overcome that fear. Fear shouldn’t be the reason.

Tarantulas are observational pets like fish, they don't enjoy being handled (at absolute best they tolerate it, right up until they don't) and get nothing out of being handled besides the risk of injury/death.

You shouldn't be attempting to emulate morons on social media who care more about looking edgy on the internet than the safety of their animals.

let’s just think about it. Why would someone want to handle there tarantula.
1. They enjoy it crawling on them which makes them want it to not be such a self centered enjoyment so they know say the spider enjoys it as well. The keeper denies all accusations of the t not enjoying it even when the evidence is clearly present. Now we have constructed a loop which will constantly cycle. This is why this question constantly pops up. Yes, to me tarantulas are fascinating, truly, and I have been obsessed with arachnids for a long time. There is a certain curiosity to keepers that what’s to see that tarantula walking on them. See the way there body moves and how they react. Although, the root of it is personal enjoyment and self centered.
Why should we not handle our tarantulas
1. It’s extremely stressful and uncomfortable to them.
2. It’s dangerous to them
3. It’s dangerous to the keeper.
4. There are many other pets out there that are meant for companionship.
There countless more reasons out there
