Maybe this is the key to spider hunting in the wild. Farting. Who knew...
My dad used to fart and blame it on the spiders....o_O

I think maybe our dads must have known each other! (Or at least they were both well versed in the lore of the infamous "barking spider.")

I think I'll be the first to TRULY study this topic. The world needs to know!
Well, if you're going to do this you will need data on both sound & smell. The easiest way to achieve this would be to first place your ear next to the tarantula's butt, then your nose. And you have to do this with as many species as possible so you can compare sound and odor variables between species. I would suggest starting with Stromatopelma calceatum and Cyriopagopus hainanus, it should be all down hill from there.

If it is confirmed that tarantulas do fart then that would open the door to even more questions such as:
Do they smell their own farts?
Do they "Dutch oven" each other when paired up?
And of course, do they think farts are funny?

I take great joy from the thought that every time a tarantula farts it has a little giggle to itself.

I was wondering if scorpions fart. It would be an interesting thing. It would come fron right behind the vesicle and I found it humorous to imagine fartatious gasses traversing up through the metasoma.

Googling these questions had led me here.

New question! Can tarantulas cry, for instance when they can’t find a cricket wandering around their enclosure, it would make me feel sad if I walked in on any of my girls crying, and how weird would that look lol, *worlds smallest violin plays for the worlds smallest tear*

It's well documented that female tarantulas actually can cry. But only when you tell her her butt is looking bigger.
I told her it was a good thing she didn't believe me :bigtears:

lmao the only on crying is me when I found out how slow B. smithi grows

1: find spider physiology textbook on not libgen
2: look at chapter on digestive system
3: check what they have written about gut microbiome. If any of the bacteria found there produce methane, the answer is probably yes
