After obseving my Femal Emp. I have noticed a repete patern of behaviour. She has to entrances to her burrow, one has a small twig fallen cross the right hand side of her entrance, this gets moved around a bit due to her nocternal activitys, however whenever she is waiting in the mouth of this burrow she will always rest her right claw on this twig, regardless as to wher it is. I think but cant confirm that she has even returned it after it was moved (by me), but it could just be she nudged it. Does this point towards a memory. I know there is more to Scorps than mets the eye, and after haveing my 2 Emps, i have seen a great deal i did not give them credit for. Each Scorp being an individual, and showing personality traits. Anyone got simular experiances or coments?

i asked my scorps if they have a memory but they cant seem to remember. :D

hehe, just kidding, couldnt resist it.

but seriously, they do seem to have a limited sort of memory. they get used to me fiddling around their enclosures and dont get all nervous like the first few times i would put my hand inside the tanks (these are heterometrus sp.)

Mine seems to remember where everything in his viv is, other than that everything else seems to be highly instinctive. I guess they have limited memory, but I don't know.

My A.Australis is like the roadrunner, I observe him at night, He is very fast and quick to speed through my cave system and under a set of rocks, to the area he is always at. Once they get use to their environment they adjust and do remember where to go, and the exact pattern. Just like when you put a new scorpion in a new setting, they explore, and know where everything is, interesting.

All-

I know it sounds a bit "anthro" but aside from instinctive and learned behaviors, I, too, believe that scorpions possess a limited form of "memory". Whether there's more at work (chemo-, mechano-reception; vibratory signatures, etc.) than a form of true "memory", who knows at this infant stage of our knowledge and understanding of these enigmatic animals?
Personally, I try to keep an open mind regarding such aspects of behavior. Considering that few can even agree on the systematics of the scorpion fauna of the world, who can say in regards to behavior?

The real question is:

If they do possess some form of "memory", is this a good or bad thing for us keepers? LOL

Having had 4 imperials, one after another, I wouldn't say that I noticed, memory as such, but certainly they each exhibited repetative behaviour. I was fascinated by the difference in each of them, they really do have very individual ways. One big male I had learnt how to climb up the thermometer cable, watching him,he learnt very quickly where the cable was above him and grasped it "claw over claw" to get to the top of the tank. I lowered him with some big tweezers and took the thermometer out. It was really interesting though. Another male liked to climb up the mesh on the back of the tank and just sit there like a big spider. everyone I know cant see the fascination in them, but they amuse me for hours!!

Joey, i agree, i have to adult Emps. each one has a completely different pesonality. The male has found he can latch on to the sticky Exo-tera thermometers i have in his Temp. tank. He spends hours with his legs raped around it. He bathes/drinks from the wter i provide to, sits in it for hours. The female is completely different, she regulary cleans her self, (has anyone else witnessed this, the secreation they leave causes then to glow even mor vividly) and she has favorit spots around her tank she likes to sit and wait. Also a ferousious digger, has a masive tunel and cave network.
