We use lots of candles and have never had a problem with it affecting the T's. i am allergic to stick incense, so we have never tried that. Honestly, if the plug-in is not right next to your T's, i don't see a problem developing.

edited to add: Hello from a fellow Hoosier!

I have heard of them causing respiratory problems in birds, so I would not trust them.

incense bad

incense is bad. Any burning material will give chemical compounds that affect life to some degree or other. It may be that the T lives six less months, or has less babies per egg sac, but there will be an effect. But it's not going to keel over and die unless maybe you hotbox it.

For air fresh, It would depend. I don't know of anything being put out by plug ins that would be a problem. I just grabbed my AF from under the sink to look at it. It is Lysol neutra air sanitizing spray. Active ingredients are Triethylene Glycol, Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium saccharinate.

I seriously just googled that last one, and guess what? ITS A PESTICIDE!

other options for fresh air

Some non-burning, non-pesticide options might be:

Potporri (sp?)-super strong dried flowers and plants, try craft stores, use little
Herb bags-Austin area hippy and herb stores sell little packets of lavender for cheap, put one in each room, it smells good, and it will keep you mellow
Baking soda-It won't mask odors, but it does absorb them.
Live plants-I know most of can't afford to buy a jungle for our apartments this week from local nursery, but plants will help clean and freshen air.

For those of you with incense, its still good to stick in window sills ect, I use incense still, I just don't light it anymore.

Anyone else have any ideas? :O) ryan

A note on the potpourri. You can put into a glass jar with some christmas lights. When the lights are turned on it will smell stonger.
I have mentioned a couple of times in threads that sage sticks are safe around birds (in moderation. dont leave a whole stick burning next to them.) so they should be fine around Ts also.

i had a ferret who had serious respiratory problems non-stop, and it was because of one of those plug-ins being near the cage.

So I'm not sure about tarantulas, but it does affect other animals.

I wouldn't use them.

I use vinegar and water to keep everything clean, and everything stays odor-free, which is fine with me. Artificial flowery scents bug me anyhow.

I just make sure the cages are clean and sanatise at least once a month (as far as sanitizing goes) picking up fecal matter and the like is an easy way to control and actually eliminate most odor (sp?):)

clarifying my AF

That neutra air I mentioned was old and bought before I had animals, It was needed temporarily for some heavy funk then put away. I haven't used it around any of my pets. Just had to put that out after re-reading my post and seeing a different way it could be taken. Peace, ryan

just speculation, but i think scented oil/tea light candles might be a safe alternative, if simply cleaning regularly doesn't cut it.

I'd imagine anything that releases particulate matter such as incense or candles wouldn't be that great in close proximity to the Ts, purely on the basis that over time everything accumulates and although it's easy to clean a tank it's slightly harder to get out a brush and scrub out the inside of your Ts lungs :)
